The Carolina Inn
   Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The Carolina Inn has sat on the doorsteps of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s campus, serving as the central meeting place for students, academics, faculty, local townspeople and visitors, since it opened in 1924. Though the property itself has evolved since John Sprunt Hill first built the inn, its luxury has remained constant.

The Carolina Inn pioneered what’s now known as the Southern Colonial style, a mixture of Georgian, Neoclassical and European influences. The original facade of the building was modeled after the front of Mount Vernon that faces the Potomac River, and the whole structure embraces the feel of a plantation-style mansion. An extensive collection of antiques, along with a few objects original to the inn, complements the casually elegant decor.  Extensive renovation has restored much of the inn’s traditional warmth and grandeur while adding modern features and conveniences necessary for a building next to one of the country’s best universities.

Today the Carolina Inn has 184 guest rooms and suites, a superb restaurant, outstanding meeting and banquet facilities and an expert staff.

The property was donated to the University in 1935 with the stipulation that its net profits would go to support the University Library.
