Hotel Boulderado
   Boulder, Colorado

The Boulderado reached its name by merging Boulder and Colorado, a memorable mutation of its host city and state that captures the inviting qualities of both locations. The hotel sits within the downtown historic district, enveloped in Boulder’s surprisingly hip small-town chic, while the imposing conical peaks of the Rocky Mountains surround the town.

The construction of the Boulderado—Boulder’s first luxury hotel—was funded by a generous stock subscription service and when it opened on New Year’s Day in 1909 it was an instant success. When you step under the green awning and enter the five-story Italianate brick building and stand under the lobby’s glittering stained-glass ceiling you’ll understand why. Follow the cantilevered cherry staircase from the lobby to any room and discover elegant antique and reproduction-style furnishings throughout—but don’t let the facade fool you into thinking the amenities are equally antiquated; every room has cable television and high-speed Internet access, and two expansions in the ‘80s brought the number of guest rooms to 160, along with over 8,000 square feet of meeting and wedding space.

The Q Dining room offers impeccable contemporary American cuisine, and the inviting sound of live jazz and blues rises from the Boulderado’s aptly-named Catacombs bar. The downtown Pearl Street Pedestrian Mall is one block away, multiplying your dining and shopping choices. But no one will fault you if you stick to your room, intoxicated on the views of the Rocky Mountains from your window.

Generous stock subscriptions funded the five-story Italianate brick building's construction at a cost of $131,664.
