Deer Path Inn
   Lake Forest, Illinois

Deer Path Inn made its debut in 1929 and quickly grew to become one of the most popular pastoral escapes for Chicagoans willing to make the 30-mile drive north. The inn’s status as a stately retreat on the shores of Lake Michigan still holds today, offering the hard-to-find sensation of not only stepping back in time, but also into another country.

Modeled after the mid-15th-century Manor House, a half-timbered and stucco Tudor home in Chiddingstone, Kent, England, the inn features authentic detailing, including stone fireplaces, leaded windows, beamed ceilings and an extensive collection of antiques and artifacts that evoke the atmosphere of an English country estate. A photograph of the home in Chiddingstone is on display in the reception area, and photographs and drawings of the Deer Path Inn from the 1920s and the ‘30s decorate the downstairs hallway at the entrance to the White Hart Pub, also modeled after an old English-style public house.

Deer Path Inn contains 55 guest rooms, including 30 suites, each individually decorated and named after a National Trust of England historic site. It also accommodates the North Shore’s award-winning English Room restaurant, with an extensive wine cellar, banquet rooms and an outdoor courtyard in full English splendor—details that complete the evocation of old Europe.

The original Deer Path Inn was on the site of a hunter's cabin on the Deerpath - a trail leading to Lake Michigan.
