Excited Vineyard residents flocked to see the new resort hotel on Starbuck’s Neck in the days before its grand opening on June 22, 1891. They marveled at the comfortable bedrooms, the gaslights in every room and the size of the public parlors. “Built on a generous scale,” the ads said. Then, as now, guests enjoyed a completely secluded area of large elm trees within easy walking distance of downtown Edgartown, with sweeping views of Edgartown Harbor and Chappaquiddick Island. A multimillion dollar ongoing renovationbetween 2000-2005 restored the hotel to its former Gilded Age splendor.
