Hotel Lombardy
   Washington, District of Columbia

The Hotel Lombardy offers the rare advantage of an accommodation evocative of a comfortable, small-town home smack dab in the center of the nation’s capital. This is no coincidence: Hotel Lombardy’s first incarnation was as a private residence converted to a classic European-style hotel in 1994, beautifully preserving the red-brick and limestone facade. The hotel overlooks historic Pennsylvania Avenue and is decorated with ornate Oriental woolen rugs and original local art.

Each of the 136 guest rooms and suites are detailed with imported Italian and German fabrics complemented by stainless-steel kitchenettes, beautiful chrome-and-enamel period bathrooms, fine bedding and imported silk fabrics. A French-inspired continental restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the Venetian Bar and Lounge offers light fare and some much-needed respite after a day of meetings or exploration of the nearby Smithsonian museums.

The entirety of Washington, D.C., is also at hand. Most attractions are within walking distance, while points of interest further afield are readily accessible via the nearby Metrorail stop. The Lombardy succeeds in putting you in the middle of it all and then letting you forget it.

Hotel Lombardy has the only manually-operated elevator in a hotel in Washington.
