Hotel Maison de Ville and The Audubon Cottages
   New Orleans, Louisiana

The location Maison de Ville and Audubon Cottages in the very heart of the ever-beating New Orleans French Quarter would be reason enough to pay this lodging a visit. But when you stand in front of two-storied terrace house, Maison de Ville becomes a rightful destination in itself.

The main structure, whose name is French for “town house,” was just that—a two-story dwelling rebuilt around 1800 after a fire raged through most of the neighborhood.

Since its inception, the building has hosted some of the city’s—and the country’s—most significant characters, from an apothecary remembered for serving New Orleans’ first cocktail to the Big Easy playwright Tennessee Williams, who finished A Streetcar Named Desire while in residence. As you walk from the main building through the tranquil courtyard, you stroll around a cast-iron fountain before reaching one of four beautifully appointed guest houses, originally slave quarters constructed 50 years before the main building.

On nearby Dauphine Street sits the Audubon Cottages, named after John James Audubon, who produced a portion of his Birds of America series while residing here in 1821. These cottages, the guest rooms in the main building and the slave quarters have all undergone extensive renovation and today offer a spectacular, period respite from the otherwise nonstop energy of Bourbon Street and the rest of New Orleans.

Tennessee Williams finished writing A Streetcar Named Desire and John James Audubon produced a portion of his Birds of America series while in residence.
