Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a living history museum that seeks to preserve and interpret the Shaker way of life. Here the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing created a utopian community, a peaceful haven for work and worship. As America’s largest and most comprehensive Shaker community, Shaker Village also affords visitors one of the most serene lodging experiences in the country. This National Historic Landmark encompasses more than 2,900 acres of farmland and 34 original 19th century buildings that have been painstakingly restored. Costumed interpreters recreate a world where simplicity and harmony reigned, where form followed function and where less was truly more. Guests can enjoy special event presentations, musical performances, workshops and educational programs that are designed to offer insight into Shaker beliefs and customs. Daily demonstrations include broom making, spinning, weaving, coopering, domestic work, wood working, farming and gardening. Shaker Village is run by a non-profit corporation that oversees its preservation and interpretation and is open to the public every day of the year, except December 24th and 25th. The funds for operating the Village are generated through visitor admissions and charitable contributions.
