On certain occasions, tragedy can inspire greatness. Such is the case of Rhode Island’s Newport Beach Hotel and Suites (formerly known as the Inn at Newport Beach.) A massive hurricane in 1938 wiped out the town’s numerous beach establishments. Two years later, after the sand settled, the Toppa family decided to build a new inn on the beach, positioning the property 100 feet from the rocks and the ocean’s crashing waves. Over 65 years later, the Newport Beach Hotel and Suites is the only beachfront hotel in town.

The original historic hotel has just completed a multi million dollar interior renovation and a 26 Suite Addition is under construction and will open August 2008.  This new addition will feature an indoor pool and Jacuzzi, fitness center with spa treatment room, rooftop year-round hot tub and fire pit.

The New England Gabrel-style inn rises four stories, with a stretch of green grass separating the front door from the inviting sands and azure waters. Most of the guest rooms and suites offer ocean views. Displays of historic memorabilia are found throughout the hotel, and during a 2001 renovation the bright, airy and individually decorated guest rooms were completely refurbished.

The Newport Beach Hotel and Suites also has an ocean-view cafe and is within walking distance to the world-famous Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport. Historic downtown and the region’s fleet of massive mansion lining Bellevue Avenue is just one mile away.

For an added measure of comfort and safety, the inn was set back 100 feet from the shore.
