T he Inn at Rancho Santa Fe grew from an unlikely source: the landscape was first inhabited by a Eucalyptus forest to be used for railroad ties, but when the wood was deemed unusable, a young female architect was commissioned to design a quaint village and guesthouse to entice prospective land buyers.
The town was completed in 1923 and named Rancho Santa Fe and the guesthouse became known as La Morada (Spanish for “home with many rooms”). The Spanish Colonial style used would later become a hallmark of California architecture and, as a result, many hotels mimic the appearance of the Inn at Ranch Santa Fe.
The original guesthouse and surrounding cottages blend harmoniously into 20 acres of lush, flowering gardens, manicured lawns and meandering pathways. While maintaining the original character of classic construction with traditional furnishings, the inn has seamlessly added the conveniences and amenities expected by discriminating travelers. As described in an early book, Rancho Santa Fe was designed for “comfort and contentment.” That commitment has since been surpassed.
