The Sherry-Netherland
|
 |
In 1927, Louis Sherry looked beyond his renowned ice cream and confections empire to the corner of New York’s Fifth Avenue and 59thStreet. Here, Sherry built his magnificent hotel, The Sherry-Netherland.At 560-feet and 38 stories, it was the world's tallest apartment hotel, and with an attentive staff, the hotel beckoned the affluent New Yorker to enjoy a “way of living” more than simply “a place to live.” Today, the hotel exudes elegance in its neo-Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, travertine marble base, and elaborate Gothic minaret. Modeled after the Vatican library, the lobby boasts a vaulted ceiling, gilded detailing, and crystal chandeliers. Its whimsical griffins are said to guard valuable treasure, which guests find in abundance at The Sherry. 1927
