  • Christmas Eve Dinner Let Down

by mekeeney on 2018-01-09 09:26 am

I made reservations for dinner for 4 for Christmas Eve in the main house dinning room. We wanted to look out over the gardens and all the beautiful lights and decorations. I made these reservations early Dec. (Dec 2nd or 3rd). When we arrived, we were put in the library to wait for our table. We were there for over 20 minutes. We ordered wine to drink while we waited only it was never served. When we were taken to our table we were put in a small room with no windows. That was very upsetting as I requested a table in the main dinning area. We sat down and waited for our wine. Another 30 minutes arrived and still no wine. We finally went to the buffet and got our food. Supprisingly there was no beef option and the food was luke warm at best. Still no wine and I had to go to the manager to express my displeasure at waiting 40 minutes for a glass of wine. After dinner we got coffee, put they never brought the cream requested. My daughter was married there in October and it was a beautiful wedding and the food was outstanding and was the staff. The event people know how to do their job and coordinate everything beautiful. The dinning staff seemed young and not well trained. Most unforunate because our last expeirence with Airlie was not pleasant.

  • The restaurant has a lot of work to do...

    by Teresita_Herndon_VA on 2017-10-06 12:30 am

I want to give this place 5 stars, I really do. But I simply can't. In fact, I've waited two months to write this review because I was so p***ed off at our terrible experience there that I had to calm down to write a coherent and balanced review. Even so, it's a struggle. To set the stage: this was to be a lovely, romantic "milestone" birthday with my wonderful hubby. It turned into a comedy of errors with the restaurant manager ultimately doing the right thing: he comped us the entire meal and invited us back for another one on the house (yes, it was that bad). I'm not sure we're up for another brush with frustration, but if we do I'll be happy to post another review and hope that it is more flattering. First the positive: lovely grounds, gracious setting, and--eventually--we received the food we had ordered and it was actually hot and delicious. We were in the main building, in the Garden Bistro, so we were not dependent on food being served to our room or to the pub. The negatives: first, very young, very poorly trained staff. They seemed to be nice young ladies, but they need to realize that serving is more than just presenting all the dishes on the table simultaneously with a flair! The bread service was very small - four small pieces of bread for two of us. The server dropped one on the floor and didn't notice--had to request more. While we both had a piece on our bread plate, the servers removed the toppings for the bread, leaving us with dry bread. Second, lack of attention to detail. We ordered a bottle of white wine from a vineyard we love and a vintage we know. We were served a different (more recent) vintage, charged the same price, and the servers just plunked the bottle down on the table. We had to ask them for an ice bucket--seems pretty basic, right? Third, speed and efficiency. It took over two hours to eventually get our entr?es, and when we did they were stone cold. Not even lukewarm. We had to go searching for the servers, as they didn't come back through the Garden Bistro unless they were delivering something. When we told them the entrees were cold, one of them actually said, "Well, we've been getting some complaints that the entrees were too hot." REALLY???? Said no diner ever! Food can always cool down! So were they trying to say they deliberately left our entrees in the kitchen to cool down before delivering? Ridiculous. We finally got to dessert and coffee. Dessert was great, but after they poured our coffee with great ceremony, we tasted it only to discover - yep, cold again. Another trip to the hostess stand where they were all congregated to try to get hot coffee-- and this time we spoke to the manager. Please, please, please, if you are trying to position yourself as a romantic and premium destination--as your prices certainly reflect--have more integrity in your products and your service.

  • Lovely Getaway

by akpikarsky on 2017-09-17 05:36 pm

My expectations were low because the reviews I had heard weren't very positive, however, I was completely (and pleasantly) shocked when I arrived. The staff were wonderful, the grounds were absolutely stunning, and the food was exceptional. I had visited Airlie to attend my good friend's wedding, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The gardens, pavilion, Spanish steps, etc. were gorgeous If you want a romantic getaway near the DC area but don't want to venture too far...Airlie is the perfect place!

  • Pretty but understaffed

by kgappraiser on 2017-08-22 10:02 am

I want to start with the positives. The grounds are beautiful and the staff was very friendly and helpful- I just wish there were more of them. The food was good, but when you order at the pub they have to have it delivered from the kitchen somewhere else on the property. They tell you "about 20 minutes" but my kids waited over half an hour when it was quiet, and we had to wait an hour when it was busy. Pub was sorely understaffed and overwhelmed. Housekeeping- what a joke! We asked for services 4 times and NEVER got it. We did get requested towels, but they never came to take the used ones or to maybe vacuum up one of the MANY bugs in our room. I don't like waking up with more bug bites than I went to bed with. My husband thought he dropped something under the dresser and went to take a look and they obviously never vacuum under there for it was full of cobwebs. Yes they warn about stinkbugs but we had spiders and unidentified creepy, biting bugs galore in our room. Plus at night they keep the lights on outside the rooms, so when you come back you get attacked. Would make more sense to put in motion lights so you don't have a congregation of bugs outside your door waiting to attack and rush into your room. The coffee was to put it bluntly swill. It was disgusting. For a place with good food and nice gardens you'd think they would have a decent brew but no it was horrible. The staff we did interact with was extremely nice and helpful. I just think they need more people working there and to update their rooms and food services. Oh and they have no idea how to start a fire, so if you get a s'mores kit be ready to make your own fire in the fire pits.

  • Beautiful place for rest and relaxation

    by sxtt38a on 2017-06-28 09:56 am

we were here for a family wedding, and what a lovely location to have it. The staff went well out of their way to assist us, whether it be directions, a ride or general help. The food served at the reception was excellent and plentiful. The checkout was easy, except for a charge on my bill I didn't make, but was graciously taken off.
