  • Really Great Hospitality

    by Dzf3yy on 2018-03-15 05:58 pm

Driving up the coast, 8:30 pm, and nothing on the road but Sasquatch & me! Had to stop before reaching Eureka, and googled only hotel with restaurant. Pulled in with no resv, and got a great rate of $140. Raining, cold and dark...but everyone here is full of sunshine...and when sunshine is not there, Humbolt may have substitutes (I smelled them!!) but I do not judge. I just appreciate smiles! You have to read the history on this place, and the grounds/setting is gorgeous. This is definitely a destination vacation place, and not a "for the night" place...but I loved it!

Room: standard queen. All antiques. No TV, but I didn't need it. Very quiet, at least tonight, and just what I needed. The complimentary carafe of sherry is a sweet touch! Keurig coffee and tea, which was an unexpected modern touch in this Oak room.
Cons: I would have paid the extra $$ to get a room with a larger bathroom. Smaller than a motor home in this room. Bumped my head on the soap holder trying to lean over for the shower valve. Ouch. knees hit sink from toilet! For me fine (small woman)but a large man, or woman, would never navigate this. The glasses in the bathroom were not properly washed...lipstick on both. Eek. And my hair dryer was in-op. But great water pressure in the shower and plenty of hot water!

Lounge: showed up at 8:30. Place is packed with young...probably industry night...workers. Everyone seemed to know eachother, or this is the only place to hang. Restaurant closed at 8:30...way too early. Saw some families come in for dinner, and forced to sit with kids in the lounge/bar. You could see their i said it was a happening "young" hangout. Waitress was overloaded, but handled it with a smile and grace. Bar menu was actually reasonable (ie hamburger/fries $15) while dinner entrees in restaurant were $25+. Not sure, but I saw a couple fresh from wine country and I think the corkage was free. hotel also gave me a complimentary bottle of Benbrow wine from Napa!

So...for recommendations: not a place with modern features. No GYM...which is my number 1 requirement (although, the property has amazing trails, which I would have experienced a.m. --the rain got in the way.) If you are fairfield inn tired, Best Western bored...try this. Don't expect high tech (wifi barely worked, but my cell was fine!) But feel a bit off the grid, take a couples weekend(must be amazing sitting on the deck with the river rushing feet away...with a bottle of wine!!) or plan a family golf/hiking weekend.

Enjoy! And smile back at everyone that is greeting you with a smile. Everyone!

An excellent experience for us. The rooms were very nice, clean, and quiet. The staff was courteous and always helpful. Easy access to everything. A little pricey for the area, though. All in all, we would stay there again.

  • A Step Back in Time

This Inn was built in the early 1920ies and the quality of the woodwork and craftsmanship is evident throughout.
In every room and through the entire structure, fine antique furnishings can be seen. The restaurant in this Inn is fabulous, both in decor and the fine quality of it's food offerings. All the wait staff is wonderful and attentive. The bar staff (both Mike's) make the very best "Lemon Drop" we have ever tasted! This historic Inn is not to be missed.

  • Small rooms and slow internet

For the price there is better value in Garberville. We were surprised at the small size of the room. The room is perfectly adequate but for the price and with "historic" title we thought there would be more. The staff is more reluctant than welcoming.

    Owner Response
Thank you for your review. Our hotel was built in 1926 and great emphasis was made on the public areas. Our great lobby, dining room, dining terrace, cocktail lounge are wonderful historical venues our guests can enjoy. Hotel rooms in any historical hotel in general were built more to resemble European Style Guest Rooms in that they were small. So some ( 7 exactly) of our guest rooms are original and small compared to a typical hotel room built today. Our Terrace Building rebuilt in the 1980's has much larger rooms as are four of our Premium Kings in the historical building. Our new addition just opened with ADA rooms which are larger than most hotel rooms today. So my point is we have choices. Your comment that our "staff is more reluctant than welcoming", is difficult to respond to as there are no specifics. We stand by our staff they are gracious, willing to be of help and know that we as a family company want to provide the most accommodating hospitality one can experience. Our reviews support that. We are working on our Wi-Fi and will have improvements made.

  • Wonderful Date getaway

Attention to detail in rooms, common spaces, and restaurant. Friendly, accommodating staff gave us a tour of the new rooms on the fourth floor. Beautiful views, delicious meals in the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The afternoon tea and scones were delicious and appreciated. We had a delicious dinner, the steak, salmon and the sturgeon appetizer. The staff, from housekeeping, front desk, to the wait staff were pleasant, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Thank you for an amazing mid-week get-away.
