  • History Abounds

Stayed two nights at this historic hotel with a gal pal. If you are a history buff or just want to stay in a beautiful setting then this is the place for you. I don't want to make this too long so if you want to know more about the history of the property, check out their website. Remember, this is a hotel on the national register of historic hotels so no tv in our room. Not sure about the rest so ask. This isn't some ultra modern digs which is what we loved. The patio off the bar is beautiful with a small band playing while you enjoy the best food. Try the catfish, salmon, and pasta. ALL were delicious.

Beautiful setting the Benbow Inn is in. Lunch on the patio is very nice, grab an umbrella though. It can get hot. The lunch menu is delicious, I like the BLT and the cheesecake is wonderful. They base the flavor seasonal. So yummy!!! The staff is a big part of why I love it here so much. They're so nice and helpful. Dinner here too is grand with summer music in the patio as well. All the food is good. Special place for sure.

  • Beautiful reminder of a bygone era

We stayed at The Benbow Inn for one night after spending several nights in the Trinity mountains. We took our time and drove down through Eureka and ventured through the Avenue of The Giants to arrive late afternoon on a Monday at Benbow. We were hoping to cool off, but the lake and river are too low to do much more than wade in and the pool is actually across the way at the KOA campsite. While clean, it is also small, crowded and chaotic if you are there during a busy period at the campsite. We made the best of it though and did go in the river and the pool. (We found the pool cleared out after dinner, and had it almost to ourselves!) We ate on the terrace at the Inn - same menu - same good service. Food was wonderful! The rooms are tired, cramped and in need of repair. Our room, (307 in the main house) had a broken window and lamp, for example. The sherry at night is a lovely touch though and the staff were all very helpful. Love the afternoon tea and scones and the whole atmosphere at the Inn. Would definitely go back once construction is complete!

  • On the way to the Avenue of the Giants

We stayed in the cottage, a suite that is on the terrace dining level. We could sit on our private balcony overlooking the Eel river and stone bridge and listen to the fantastic live jazz trio. The room was quaint with a poster bed and antique furniture, a fireplace, and big jacuzzi tub and separate shower. Even though we could here 101 from the balcony, it was quiet at night.

  • Beautiful historic hotel in a pretty setting

We have always wanted to see Benbow Inn because of the history of the hotel. We spent the last night of our 10 day road trip vacation here.

My rating for the hotel: 5 out of 5. Staff: 1 out of 5.

Hotel: The hotel is a must see and the grounds are beautiful, right on the Eel River. The water levels of the river are down now, but we can see and hear the water running from our balcony (so soothing). Our room was comfy and quiet (Terrace King room). Our room also had two comfortable chairs, an ottoman and nice antique furnishings. The A/C worked great. The bed was on the firm side, and the room also had a Keurig coffee maker and small fridge (no microwave), plenty of extra pillows and blankets. We loved sitting out on our balcony/terrace and relaxing with a book and the sound of the water. We truly enjoyed wandering around the property and looking at pictures of the past, beautiful antique furniture pieces and architectural details. The afternoon tea and scones were great.

Staff: Every staff member we encountered, with the exception of our waitresses at dinner, were not very friendly, bordering on arrogance. Perhaps they all were having a bad day, but the sheer lack of teamwork was very evident from check in to check out. As a prior reviewer said, we also were made to feel that we weren't worth the time or effort. We had dinner reservations for 6:30 pm and arrived at 6:20 pm, just to be told by a woman (in a very snotty way) that we were early and would have to wait. There were only 6 people in the restaurant at the time, with lots of empty tables, so I thought that perhaps this woman was kidding, but no. She told us to sit outside and she would come to get us at 6:30 pm, but she never did. Finally at 6:40 we went back in and was seated by a different lady that was apologetic (and seemed very stressed out). Our server and busgal were wonderful and very friendly and professional. The food prices are a bit on the high side, but I was expecting that here. I had the chef's soup of the day (carrot and ginger, excellent!) and the Gem Salad (excellent). My husband had the special (short ribs, okay, but not great). The bread and tapenade were excellent. We did not have to wait long for our food, or our bill when we were finished. There was a live trio playing on the large terrace, which was very enjoyable.

The next day: complimentary coffee is supposed to be available upstairs by the restaurant, but my husband and I went up three times and no coffee. We were told (1) that the coffee server was running late; (2) that they had run our of coffee filters; (3) and lastly, they did not know what to do or if there was going to be coffee. The restaurant opens at 8:00 am for breakfast. We are not big breakfast eaters (plus did not want to spend the $$), so we had some of our road snacks instead before hitting the road. Also, there is no room service in this hotel, but you can order something from the restaurant to go and take it back to your room.

In summary, for the price we paid per night, I expected better customer service. But I am glad that we experienced this historic hotel.
