  • Once you make it inside -- a great experience! [Time-limited review]

    by LarryM708 on 2017-10-13 09:54 am

Expectations-setting time! Your first impressions, if you are like me, are not wholly positive. If you visit the web site, you are forewarned that the hotel is under construction. It will be great once they are done, but right now (Oct 2017), not so much. [This review would presumably be very different when the project is completed.]

There is limited space to park for registration and baggage off-loading. And you are met with a sign about baggage service, that turns out to be true: Leave your bags at the base of the stairs, and a staff person will get them to your room. There are presently NO elevators in this historic inn, thus the new construction aimed at ADA compliance. I trust their plans include beautifying the landscaping out front! And repaving drive ways and parking areas.

Our room was on the second floor, overlooking the large patio. The room was very small, by modern standards, but easily large enough for a one-night stand! The small bathroom was clean; hot water (took a while to get through the pipes) was plentiful.

Oh, the sherry! Complimentary sherry and two glasses on a tray awaiting us! Nice touch.

When you register, I recommend you make dinner reservations right them (if you are dining in the inn). Our dinner was wonderful; the service was impeccable. (The inn gave us a $40 credit for food in their dining room.)

So, ... come prepared for a historic-inn experience. And soon they will have the construction completed (I overheard the desk say they hoped to be done by Xmas 2017; but don't quote me!).

  • What a fabulous place!

    by Jane R on 2017-10-08 01:44 pm

This Inn, built in 1926, is an absolute delight! Great atmosphere, full of beautiful antiques. The food and service are outstanding! It's so nice being right on the Eel River. The grounds and area by the river invite strolling. also, close proximity to beautiful Redwoods.

  • Great stay

    by Vince S on 2017-10-07 11:07 am

This place is beautiful. Real historic architecture and beautiful wood working inside. The grounds are really nice. The staff is very professional.
If you are exploring the redwoods, this is a good place to stay.
The only downside is the area. I didn't realize how bad the meth problem was in this part of the state. The immediate area is okay but go to some surrounding towns and there are homeless drug addicts everywhere. We went exploring for a place to have dinner and ended up back at the inn.

  • Lovely setting

Of course the remodel and subsequent dust and machinery detracts from the initial impression of the Inn but inside it is quiet and restful. Once the remodel is completed and the gardens and surrounding areas are restored, it will be beautiful .
The terrace room overlooking the garden and bridge was delightfully decorated and comfortable. The patio was a lovely place to sit and read. Our request for ice was fulfilled in minutes. There is a small refrigerator and a coffee maker in the room. Coffee is available in the lobby also free scones and tea in the afternoon ,but we missed out as we had no hotel directory in our room ( this was also rectified in a few minutes)

We enjoyed a cool drink on the terrace in the afternoon and returned there for dinner in the evening.

  • Cute grounds, tiny rooms and uncomfortable beds

by NSchrockinCalifornia on 2017-10-01 07:46 am

This hotel has some nice aspects, a cute lobby that serves coffee and tea, a patio deck that looks out over the river and a cute bridge, outdoor tables on back patio deck with a cute fire pit, a bar that transports one back to the 1920s. We never did see a pool. However, our room and bath were TINY and the bed super uncomfortable (tiny and bouncy). The bar is cute but our manhattan cost was $17.50. We had a delicious breakfast there but opted to go to town for dinner because one of our favorite restaurants is in town. Currently Benbow Inn is doing renovations so there is construction chaos going on.

The next night we moved to the Humbolt House, where our room was about three times the size of ours at Benbow and the bed was much better. I doubt that I would go back to Benbow.
