  • This motel inspired entire NJ trip!

by flatfaces on 2018-05-13 06:42 pm

I had planned this NJ shore trip for 2 years after learning of this adorable motel. Now, to be fair, we most often stay in resorts and better hotels, but have definitely stayed at my fair share of Courtyard Hotels too. Although I haven't stayed in a motel since junior high, I was thrilled about the kitschy retro motel theme. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience to that of JosephAndMicki.

My husband & I travel yearly to beach destinations the second week in May. We are very aware that most towns, restaurants and businesses are busy opening back up for the season that week. We were the only 2 people at this motel, which was okay in the beginning. We met the management and housekeeper upon arrival, both were very friendly. They recommended restaurants and Were very accommodating. I didn't think too much of it when they said they had posted an emergency number on the door of the office if we needed anything. Coffee would be in the office at 8:00am in the morning.

We quickly checked in, checked out motel & room, took some pics, and headed out to explore the town. When we returned a few hours later, it was very ominous to be the only ones there! The housekeeper was there for awhile. The next morning we waited for the coffee, the office to open- no one there! Our hairdryer ( FYI: the really low heat kind, attached to wall) wasn't working. We called emergency #. We were told Maintenance would bring, that did not happen. Called again, basically both mgmt and maintenance arrived to the hotel at the same time, about 8:30. Again, so odd to be the only ones there!

While room appeared very clean and well appointed, it had that really old, "musty" smell. We made it through the night, but it was not good. I hope it was just because it had been shut up. I still love the fun, light-hearted concept of the motel and appreciated the lighting, fabrics, furniture, and social spaces.

Least favorite: The office (clutter) and center area of pool (lots of cheesy pots) need to be cleaned up, less is more!

Again, the whole NJ trip evolved around this historic motel. We walked the boardwalk, shopped, ate at a couple of just okay restaurants. Wildwood was cool to see, but we LOVED Cape May.

We are sorry that you had a bad experience with us at the time of your visit. At that time of the season we are sorry to say that there are not many guests staying at the Motel especially during the week. We understand that the hair dryer was not working properly and the Maintenance Man had an emergency this morning and arrived a little late. If you are ever in the area during the season I hope you will give us another try.

  • Nice retro hotel, good location

    by mag s on 2017-09-08 12:21 am

I'd seen the hotel many times but this was the first time I stayed. I had a nice stay in a C-Luxe room and would return.

    A few comments:

The bathroom is tight but I think it's consistent with the period.

The pool depth markings are very far off, possibly well over a foot. I jumped into the 8' end and hit bottom unexpectedly hard.

For parents with small kids, the second floor railings meet the code for an earlier time.

  • Great Atmosphere for Relaxing at the Shore

by eminva on 2017-09-05 11:22 am

My goddaughter, her toddler and I stayed at the Caribbean for an escape to Wildwood Crest. We loved this historical property that nonetheless boasts many modern conveniences. The atmosphere is enhanced by the kind staff, perfect size and the presence of other relaxed and friendly guests.

The room was comfortable and spacious with charming decor. It was perfectly clean. We had wifi and a refrigerator in the room. We loved that we could pipe the 50s and 60s music from the pool into our room. Definitely got us into the spirit of things. The staff were all very friendly, taking time to chat with our toddler and making us at home.

The beach is a short distance away, as is the boardwalk. Many things to see and do. However, it is also great to relax at the pool or hang out in chairs outside your room and watch the world go by.

I'm already dreaming of a return trip. Highly recommended!

  • I Really, Really, Really Wanted To Like This Place BUT....

by JosephAndMicki on 2017-08-15 06:46 pm

I really wanted to like this place. I really, really did. And to be honest, I can only give you my experience. I see so many great reviews here, but mine was not anything like them.

First, the good points: The staff was nice when we checked in. The place is a page out of the Doo Wop era of Wildwood during the 1950's-60's on the outside, and that is very very cool. It is about a block from the beach and ocean, and only a block or so to the entrance to the boardwalk which is a blast.

And unfortunately the to be honest, this was just our experience. Others love the place but we did not. We booked for 4 nights and left after the first one and went to Cape May.

We were looking for a really great time. The beach in the Wildwoods is one of the safest on the East Coast, barely any undertow, and fantastic for children. You can go so far out into the waves without fear, its amazing. The boardwalk is very much what you would expect of a place on the Jersey Shore, a real boardwalk with rides, food and shops. It is great family fun. We were looking for a place to compliment that, and to be honest I have a certain bias having grown up in NJ and coming here with my family as a child. Now I live out of state, so this was the first time I had been back since going away to University when I was 18, which was 40 years ago.

When you first drive up to the motel, you are hit by how incredibly cool it looks. It's a little cheesy, but the doo wop architecture is so neat. We drove up, parked and went to get our room, which was half paid for in advance. It was a last minute booking, so you have to pay half to reserve and half when you arrive. There are no refunds once you arrive and pay, which is disappointing as we will never get our money back for the 4 nights we paid for. As I said, we left after one day, and if the place had been halfway OK, we would have stayed and not thrown away our money. It's not like I'm made of it or anything.

OK, so the people who checked us in were the owners. They were SO VERY NICE, smiles, helpful, gave us a welcome package, directions to the beach, boardwalk, local eateries, you name it. We joked around, talked about our trip, like I said very nice people.

Went to the room, and walk in and this is where we had our first problem. The room smelled like pee. Now to be honest, maybe it was just our room, but to rent a room that smells like pee seems like a bad idea and might get a bad review, so why rent it? Maybe they didn't know?

Free wifi. The wifi didn't work. It kept shutting down, didn't connect and if it did connect, it was very slow. After a half hour of doing my best to get it to connect, using the password, etc. sometimes my device said it couldn't find the wifi, or it kept asking me to enter the pasword which sometimes worked, sometimes did not.

Now I don't know about you, but when I travel wifi is essential. I need to do certain things while on the road. I actually can't do without it. So I went to the office and asked if there was a problem with the wifi. I was told they just had it fixed. I explained my situation, and even mentioned that maybe it was a dead spot, but what I got was not the friendly faces I had before, so I left and went back to the room.

OK, fine, no problem. I'll use my iphone hotspot to connect. That worked. But it ate up a ton of data, so what are you going to do. I went over my monthly amount, not the motel's fault. But I should have had wifi. So now I had no wifi and was in a room that smelled like pee, and paying to connect to the internet.

Strike 3....the bed was rock hard. Came for the 1950's doo wop vibe and experience and that included a spring bed probably not replaced since the 1950's. Rock hard, couldn't sleep, my sciatica acts up and my wife's back hurts as well. After 2 hours of trying to sleep, and I was very tired when I went to bed, I got up, smelled my room of pee, and didn't even have wifi to use my ipad to distract me from a tough night. So I went outside and surfed the web using my hotspot and booked another room, in Cape May at 3:30am, and left The Carribbean motel the next day.

I really, really wanted to like this place. I kid you not, but I wasn't about to spent another night in a pee room, no wifi and unable to sleep because of a hard bed. We made sure the place was clean when we left, put our stuff in the car, went to the boardwalk for a little bit of fun to wash the bad taste out of our mouths, returned to our room, dropped the keys on the dresser, closed the door behind us and drove away.

So to be honest, this was OUR experience. It may NOT be yours. I would check the room before paying in full, make sure it meets your expectations and if not move on. Make sure the wifi works. Make sure the bed is comfortable. Make sure there aren't any weird smells. Don't listen to us if you think we are crazy, or you can't imagine why there are so many good reviews and this one isn't. Be objective. Check it out for yourself, but I would be in the wrong if I didn't write this review as a gentle warning.

This place has serious potential, but as of this writing, we would never return.

So sorry I had to right I said I really wanted to like the place.

We're very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at the Caribbean. We wish you would have come to us and advised of your dissatisfaction. We checked your room after discovering you had left and didn't smell the odor you did. Sometimes the Wi-Fi is finicky but we did recently have a technician enhance the signal and have called him again to re-check it. If you had come to us we would have provided you with some options. For example, there were other rooms available including an upgrade C-Luxe room. If you thought the mattress was too hard we may have been able to swap it out. We could have discussed a possible refund. The first step should always be to let us know of any issues you have. Our track record with guest satisfaction is good because we care about your experience. I hope you will consider returning to the Caribbean.
