  • Dishonest from start, and apology - avoid

    by Peter A on 2018-07-19 010:34 pm

On arrival, we went to the check in, and something was wrong. The agent conferred with another agent, came back, and to my inquiry about my reservation for the "signature room", she dismissed me with a response of "there's no problem". We got our keys and headed upstairs.

When we got into the room, it was nice, but it had 2 double beds, not queen beds, a view of the bay, and also the AC ducting and generator noise. Angry that the desk clerk obviously knew that they had downgraded me and said nothing, I guess hoping I would notice, I immediately called the front desk, and got a manager call back, saying they were sorry, but this was the only room available. I asked for upgrade instead, but no, there were no rooms (despite there being rooms on their website) they said it was because of a 'photo shoot' (obviously more important than Hotels.com customers). They instead offered me a $100 food credit as a consilation gift with no other choice (my 1st nights deposit had already been collected in advance).

With their can't-refuse offer, I quickly figured out that they had credited me only the price difference from the original booking to the level of the room we were in. This was not an apology at all, just an accounting inconvenience for them. As a customer I did not count at all. They did not even remove their attached 'resort fee' for my troubles so I could use their sad efforts at rehabbing their workout and pool areas with plywood walls and a poolside 'cafe' with canned drinks, and plastic wrapped chips sandwiches, and crudites with the veggies molding (we could eat some of it).

I spent the next 2 nights not sleeping well with my wife & teenager. Went down on the 1st morning to have breakfast with my food credit. The 3 of us had 2 egg dishes, 1 granola, 2 coffees, and an orange juice. This was $95! Well, so much for that generous food credit.

The last night AFTER we had left for a 7pm dinner returning before 10, there was a bottle of wine ($10 worth?) and an apology note, I guess hoping I wouldn't write this review. Well way too little, way too late. Wont be back. Ever. Sad, as the property was pretty nice.

Dont know if this is a problem for all Fairmont hotels which seem to be under a new guest rewards banner and management, or just a problem in Berkeley, but this does not bode well.

  • Dining is the weak link at this hotel.

    by Janet H on 2018-07-18 08:14 pm

When someone arrives at the time they've reserved, they should not be asked to sit aside until all of their party arrives. A fine hotel does not have such a practice. Dining on the deck in the sun was awful. More umbrellas are needed.

  • Hotel guests at pool always a problem

by drmader on 2018-07-18 08:24 am

We live nearby and send all
Of our overflow family and friends here..fantastic location , old historic , views and service galore..LOVE the newly refreshed rooms and spa is always top
Notch..what is annoying is the local health club tennis pool club members who must be on a board or have an ownership of throes facilities and NOT want Hotel guests.. it's like the 3rd degree every time you want to sit by pool
If you have been in spa or like yesterday my brother in law-an MD stayed 3 nights at the hotel..he and I met
To visit w his wife and 10 year old at pool. I wasn't swimming and for the 3rd time? In 10 years the pool and gym are under construction..so it's not super nice at the moment anyway.. we offered to pay a guest fee..we were told no guests and asked room
Number and name about 3-4 times...told
Child was not registered in room.. I mean really? They need to figure pout leave between
Health club members . Last time my husband and I came for a spa day it was a federal case and another $50 each to sit at pool
And we were interrogated like criminal when we checked in.. should I start sending Family to lafayette park Hotel instead?

  • Excellent

    by Zachary N on 2018-07-16 010:06 pm

Great service. Nice pool. Good for families. Our room had an issue with one of the fans and it was noisey. When we complained about it, they comped us for half the room and breakfast for the whole family which more than made up for it.

  • Night away

    by Jaime L on 2018-07-13 12:58 am

My husband and i were lucky enough to escape for one night and spend it at the Claremont. The hotel is gorgeous! The service and staff are top notch. Every staff member we interacted with was sincere, helpful, kind, and courteous. Our room was GORGEOUS! The layout, amenities, bathroom and views were all fabulous.

We enjoyed the spa for a a day visit. I think the spa would be great for a girls weekend or a relaxing rejuvenation, just keep in mind that it is not co-ed, so if you are there with your husband and want to relax together it's probably not what you are looking for. I didn't realize that the hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms were not co-ed. I didn't stay long because I had hoped to spend the time with my husband.

We look forward to returning and experiencing high tea. It looked incredible from afar.
