Overview

The General Morgan Inn and Conference Center, a historic hotel in Tennessee, takes its name from the Confederate leader whose daring raids into the upper Midwest terrorized the Union Army during the Civil War. Legend has that General John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy,” tried to escape and was shot and killed in September 1864 - today’s inn marks the exact spot his body fell.

Such associations shouldn’t be considered morbid, however; the historical tapestry of the country unfurled in this verdant stretch of Tennessee, and today the four-story brick building offers a window into this storied past. The hotel's rich interiors feature mahogany furnishings and 51 spacious guestrooms with high ceilings, restored moldings, woodwork, and marble baths alongside such modern amenities as dataports, cable television, and Bath & Body Works toiletries.

The Mason Art Gallery lies just off the inn’s lobby, offering rotating exhibits from modern and traditional art to Presidential wives’ inaugural ball gowns, while historic sites in Greeneville await discovery.

General Morgan Inn & Conference Center, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2002, dates back to 1884.

Fun FactLegend has it that a local Union sympathizer alerted soldiers as the "Thunderbolt of the Confederacy" tried to escape, resulting in his death.
