George Washington Hotel (Wyndham)

Overview

With elegant marble, soaring ceiling heights and a Roman Bath-style pool, the George Washington Hotel—a classic Georgian-revival hotel—is a true gem in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. Our location in the heart of Old Town Winchester affords easy access to the areas businesses and attractions.

The property opened in April 2008 following a thoughtful thirty million dollar renovation allowing this beauty to retain the appeal and ambiance of a bygone era with all of today’s modern amenities. Originally built in 1924, the historic George Washington Hotel offers 90 guest rooms which include features such as working gas fireplaces and rainfall showers.

Developed in 1924 by the American Hotel Corporation as part of “The Colonial Chain” of hotels, the George Washington Hotel was named after our first president, George Washington, who began his association with the city of Winchester as a 16-year old surveyor in the Shenandoah Valley. As commander of the Virginia Regiment, Colonel George Washington defended Virginia against the French and their Indian allies with the establishment of a series of forts from his headquarters which is a now a museum and within walking distance of the hotel.

In the mid 1970’s the George Washington Hotel ceased to operate as a hotel. Purchased by a local family in the late 1990’s, great care was taken to preserve the history of this grand hotel. Much of the fine architectural details have been preserved and the majority of public spaces retain their historic Colonial Revival and Neo-Classical character and ornamentation. Collages in the promenade and The Half Note Lounge also help guests appreciate the local history of the hotel.

The George Washington Hotel is closely associated with The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival—established in 1924 and having their first office located on site—and has played host to such celebrities as Bob Hope, Lucille Ball and Jack Dempsey.
