Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa

Overview
Nestled among towering oaks and pines, the Gideon Putnam Resort and Spa combines Georgian-style graciousness with 21st-century comfort. The resort acquired its name from the founder of nearby Saratoga Springs, who in the early 1800s built the area’s first hotel next to mineral springs long revered by the Iroquois for their restorative powers. In 1935, the imposing brick hotel bearing Gideon Putnam’s name opened its doors. It quickly became a favorite home-away-from-home for affluent visitors drawn by the spas that grew up around the springs and by the storied Saratoga Racetrack.
The hotel sits amid the 2,300 scenic acres of Saratoga Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark District that also houses two neo-Georgian bath houses, museums, a theater, golf courses and the celebrated Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Despite its secluded setting, the Gideon Putnam is just minutes from downtown Saratoga and its collection of Gilded Age architecture, fine restaurants and cultural institutions.
The Saratoga trunk was invented to accommodate large hoop skirts, fashionable in the early days of the spa.
