  • Netherland Hotel Stay

by BykofskyTraveller on 2018-07-18 10:44 am

Sons of the Desert Convention. Room rate while at the Convention was reasonable. Breakfast should have been included. This is not an ultra modern hotel, but an art-deco gem. In the heart of downtown Cincinnati and the Airporter bus is near.

  • Gorgeous, Well-maintained hotel

Beautiful art-deco era hotel, well-maintened, clean, classic and beautiful. Would not hesitate to stay there again, but valet parking at $33/day seemed a bit pricey. But the service and valets were terrific.

  • Weekend getaway to the City!

My family loves the city, and Cincinnati was the city of choice this time. We chose Hilton at Carew Tower because I figured it would be a cool place in a neat historic building. The building architecture is amazing! Beautiful setting and in a great location. The room at the hotel was very average, small as all city rooms are, and probably could use an update. Great view of river from the room though. Not sure I would give an A for the hotel experience, however they do have a gem of a building to make up for the other issues. The breakfast was sufficient and nice prior to is departing.

  • Great place for dinner, the hotel room not so much.

Over all this is a clean, friendly people, nice old good looking hotel. The room was pretty small and aged but acceptable for me. The Orchid restaurant was amazing! Pricey but quality come with the price.

  • Beautiful Hotel, Underwhelming Room

    by thatlady_1017 on 2018-07-16 05:40 am

My husband and I stayed in a Junior Suite at the Hilton for a quick "stay-cation" over my birthday weekend.

First, the positives - the hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous. The historic art-deco style building has been carefully maintained and is just beautiful. I highly recommend having a drink in the hotel bar to fully enjoy the surroundings. It truly feels like you've stepped back in time, in a very good way.

The staff is another highlight. Everyone we met was friendly without seeming fake and clearly very knowledgeable about the hotel and surrounding area.

As I mentioned, we stayed in a One Bedroom Junior Suite, which (as I understand it), is one of the larger room categories. The room itself consisted of a living room (with full bathroom) and a separate bedroom, also with its own full bath. The living room was a bit small, but the bedroom was reasonably spacious for a downtown city hotel. The bed was large and relatively comfortable, with good pillows - no complaints there.

Where I do have some complaints is in the overall state of the room. Now, please understand - I don't require a hotel room to constantly be updated and upgraded. I've stayed in some hotels other reviewers have bashed for not being renovated, and couldn't understand the complaints. Updating a hotel every year to keep on top of the trends would result in ridiculous expense for the hotel that would then get passed along to the guests - as long as it's clean and looks relatively nice, generally no worries here.

That all said, this room is old and tired and desperately needs refurbishment. The tiny bathrooms did have a charming tile floor, but a commercial style toilet with the industrial silver lever flushing mechanism. The tubs were old, worn and stained - even if replacing the tub wasn't possible over the last several years, a re-glazing would've gone a long way. The carpet was dark brown and just worn - and also sticky, something I discovered to my displeasure as I promptly put my shoes back on. The comfortable bed had a ripped top sheet - not hidden behind a comforter, either, the rip was on top clearly displayed. There is wasted space next to the master bath - there's dark corner with a low counter installed, likely meant as a vanity but without additional lighting or a chair. A better use of that space would be to extend the master bath into a larger space.

Additionally, we discovered in the morning that our room was next to some kind of utility closet, as it was constantly being opened, something removed, then slammed shut. Despite having a separate bedroom, we could hear everything in the hallway. To some extent, this is to be expected in any hotel, but was a bit disappointing especially given the cost of the room.

Which is really the crux of this whole review, I guess. Were we staying at a lower-cost hotel, most of the things I noted wouldn't have bothered me (except the sticky carpet and ripped sheet - come on Hilton, you can do better here!). But for the price we paid, and for the fact that it's advertised as a "luxury" hotel, I can't help but feel disappointed. Don't get me wrong, we still had a nice stay, but I do hope this hotel is renovated and soon.
