  • Great Stay for Northwestern

    by Ncs967 on 2017-10-16 11:21 am

I work as a counselor at a high school in Los Angeles, and we took a group of students to visit Northwestern university. We chose the Hilton Orrington because we wanted to be within walking distance from Northwestern, and we certainly were. We were able to walk to Northwestern in 10-15 minutes. (Our slowest walkers took 15 minutes.)

The hotel itself is located in a convenient space. There are plenty of eateries within walking distance. There is also a CVS within walking distance. It is approximately 30-40 minutes from the airport, but very easy to get a pre-arranged taxi to and from the airport.

The staff members at the hotel were very accommodating, and placed our entire group on the same floor together. The rooms were on the large side for having two queen beds. The beds were comfortable with plenty of support. The tv was massive, and came with a variety of channels. The restaurant staff at the hotel was also extremely nice, and accommodating of our group.

The one thing that prevents me from giving this place a 5 is the size of the bathroom. As a chaperone, I didn't have to share the bathroom, but it is very very very small. I'm not sure how the students managed.

Overall, this place is a great stay if you want to be close to Northwestern without having to drive.

  • Mediocre

Staff was very nice. The property is just so dated. It was clean so we didn't have a problem with that. Musty smell. Toilet is so close to the tub that you have to twist yourself into a pretzel to use it. There is just no continuity with Hilton's. Some are really beautiful and some are not

Thank you for your feedback, your comments are very important to us, that's how we can improve our services and amenities. For your description of the room, looks like you stayed in one of our standard rooms, these are the smallest type of rooms that we have. At the Hilton Orrington we have 7 different room types, I encourage you to book in advance so you can select a larger type of room. Our Corner Rooms and Executive Studios have very competitive prices and you enjoy a larger bathroom, in the Executive Studio there is also a nice and spacious leaving room area.

    Safe travels,

  • Nice hotel, great location

by SunSeekerMA on 2017-10-11 11:16 am

Nice hotel and great location in Evanston. Walkable from the train station, which was nice because we didn't need to rent a car. Check in was easy & smooth, room was large, comfortable and quiet. My only issue was a strange bathroom configuration. Our room had two closets, one huge walk-in and one regular. The smaller, regular closet was right next to the bathroom. It just seemed to me like a waste of space. The bathroom was tiny, with a normal sized shower, toilet and smaller powder-room style sink. The counter-space was almost non-existent, yet here was this giant extra closet that could have been used to create more space in the bathroom? To give you an example of the closeness of the bathroom, while I was drying my hair the shower curtain kept getting sucked up into the back of it. I am a city person and I'm very used to small spaces and small bathrooms, but this just seemed like a poor design choice. I hope when they renovate next time they consider re-configuring the space. All in all though a good choice and a nice stay for a friend's wedding.

  • Way Overpriced!

by Justinskala on 2017-10-11 02:05 am

As guests we felt taken advantage of due to the timing of our visit coinciding with Northwestern's Homecoming Reunion weekend. Including taxes the room cost was almost $450/night. The quality of the rooms, bathrooms, amenities and services do not warrant close to that number even excepting the higher demand for that particular weekend. Disappointing that local hotel management felt they could do this and not think it would impact the brand. We know Hilton is in the hands of a large PE firm that wants a return. Caution.

Mr. Skala: thank you for your comments, your feedback is very important to us, we are committed to provide the best hotel experience and make sure our guests have an enjoyable stay.

We have only 4 dates in a calendar year that are Northwestern Dates. I'm glad to share that we are the preferred hotel of Northwestern families and friends when they are coming to town for the NU events. Reservations for these Northwestern dates are made one year in advance. This unusual high demand makes the rates go above our regular rates. Besides these 4 dates per year, our weekend and weekday rates are always very competitive within the hotels in the area.

    Kind regards,

  • Great location

by VeteranMike on 2017-10-10 07:35 am

My wife and I visited Evanston for the Penn State vs Northwestern Football game. The location is excellent. We were able to do a walking tour of the Northwestern campus which is only one block from the hotel. There are also many dinning options within walking distance of the hotel as well as churches for Sunday services. We were able to get the free shuttle to the football stadium at the end of the block from the hotel and return to the same corner after the game. The staff and service were excellent. We were given parking options of the city garage which would cost less if we didn't have to go in and out or a bit more expensive valet parking with in & out privileges. If you paln to take your car in & out, valet is the way to go.

The room was clean & comfortable. The HVAC unit was a bit noisy but acceptable. The bathroom was very small. The shower was excellent but the sink was a stand alone pedestal bowl & needs more shelf space. I was okay with the bathroom as I don't hang out in there, just use it as needed. The arm chair & footstool was extremely comfortable to watch TV or read.

We did not get to use the hotel restaurant. It was extremely full due to Alumni Weekend. Never saw a receptionist at the restaurant so I guess it was seat yourself. Too full to find a seat or ask for times.

If you are a seasoned traveler you will know to look for the city, county, & state tax as well as parking over the posted rate. Over all this was an very good experience and I would probably stay here again.
