  • Great room...

by seznutn on 2018-05-23 04:49 pm

Great room with a really nice shower. The elevators are rather questionable and theres some confusion as to what to do with motorcycles when you arrive which seemed super weird for a hotel in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

  • One of the most amazing Hilton hotels I’ve ever stayed in

by qsmamo on 2018-05-21 06:50 pm

I love historic hotels. The Capital Hilton (as well a the Hay Adams) were always two of my favs in DC. The Alex Johnson proved just as interesting. I simply don't believe in "haunted " places so that was not an issue. The history of the hotel and of Alex Johnson was fascinating. The hotel was very clean and comfy. Hotels amenities were nice. Staff great, although we had someone new check us in and the process was long and painful...better training in order. The hotel is well located. Lots of dining choose within walking distance. Don't miss having a drink in the Vertex rooftop bar. Lovely views and nice staff. Also good values through happy hour. Will return.

  • Historic hotel with a haunted story

    by R P on 2018-05-20 09:46 am

The Alex Johnson is a historic hotel located downtown, right smack in the middle of all of the action. If memory serves me, it is the tallest building in Rapid City as well. This hotel is famous for housing Presidents Reagan, FDR and Coolidge, Alfred Hitchcock, Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. A movie was also filmed here. Another important thing to know about the hotel is that it is haunted. The Alex Johnson is considered to be one of the most haunted hotels in the United States. I did some research prior to staying and read stories about ghosts, but merely dismissed this as pure speculation or rumors, not thinking much of it really. Had I known what I would hear or experience, I would have booked elsewhere. I am not a fan of horror or scary movies so this freaked me out. During check-in, at the desk, there is a ghost log book downstairs, packages for a ghost adventure, ghost tours and people actually want to be booked in the most haunted rooms. When I checked in, the young woman asked me if I preferred to stay on a specific floor. I found that to be an odd question and said I don't have a preference and she booked me for room 810. I soon found out as the days progressed that the eighth floor is the most haunted floor in the hotel and the two most haunted rooms on the floor are 802 and 812. 812 is where a bride to be sadly died. Many people claim to have seen her walking around in her wedding dress, thank God I did not see her. I did take a slight peek at room 812 and felt a bad vibe and left right away. On the eighth floor a little girl is said to run up and down the floor, giggles and knocks on the doors. She is Alex Johnson's daughter and passed away in the hotel. During the night, I heard lots of laughter and we would peer through the keyhole and there was no one there. I also heard foot steps creeping in our room and I would awaken and there was no one there. I knew someone was in the room, but it was not the living. Suffice to say, I did not sleep well at all. Lots of knocking too and I felt a cool gust of wind and the air conditioning was not on. Room 304 is haunted by Alex Johnson himself I heard. He too, passed away in the hotel in 1938. The elevator would also stop on the 3rd. floor for no reason. A hotel employee was in the elevator with us and when the doors opened and no one entered or left, he said loudly, "Hmm..." and shook his head. Found out later, elevator is said to stop on this floor unexpectedly. All I can say is thank the good Lord I carried my rosary beads with me. It was a paranormal experience I survived but wished I did not have to experience. One guest told me that being on the most haunted floor is part of the fun at staying here. Maybe for her, but not for me. I don't want to deter anyone from staying here because of this experience, because many people find this fun or haven't been visited by any ghosts, but if you are staying here and are not a fan of ghosts, please avoid floors 3 and 8. If you want to experience ghosts, then I highly recommend the eighth floor.

Some positives about the hotel. I found the room spacious, clean, bathroom was brand new and the shower was wonderful. Nice toiletries and inside of the hotel there is a Starbucks which is convenient and perfect for an early breakfast before heading out to see Mount Rushmore or any of the other nature excursions. There is a gift shop at the hotel and a chocolate shop called the Chubby Chipmunk. There is a pub and a rooftop bar as well. Lobby is enormous and lots of guests converge here and lounge around. Both guests and staff are super friendly and the valet and doormen were incredibly polite and courteous.

Thank you for such a detailed review of the Hotel Alex Johnson. I am delighted to see that you had such a positive experience with our staff and on-site offerings. In regards to our "spirit guests", I am sorry that you were placed on the 8th floor and that affected your quality of sleep during your stay. We do hope that we may host you again in the future and of course next time we can make sure the location of your room is more desirable to you.

  • Excellent historic hotel with fabulous service & great location!

    by Ronin C on 2018-05-19 08:00 pm

Historic, beautiful, super friendly and with all the comforts I can't say enough good things about the hotel. From the moment of our arrival to leaving we were treated wonderfully by the front-desk representative, Ms. Sierra Hammond (She's a true professional, very kind and attentive throughout) ... Check-in was extremely pleasant and the ornate lobby was welcoming!

Really well-rounded place to stay. This hotel has a nice Irish pub onsite as well as Starbucks... plus a roof-top lounge, exercise room and is centrally located- walking distance to a lot of great local shops and restaurants. The room was newly renovated with very comfy bed. Great atmosphere, the lobby has the original charm of the old west. The rooftop bar (Vertex Sky Bar) has nice outdoor seating area complete with a fire-pit, heaters and a fantastic view. What an awesome stay and a superb experience!

  • Beautiful historic hotel

    by Cindy B on 2018-05-18 04:46 am

Beautiful hotel in great location downtown near restaurants & shops. Issues in bathroom with functionality but hopefully the hotel will work on them as I left them detailed info. We found pillows and mattress to be less then adequate for our taste (to soft). We had a separate bedroom & sitting area which gave us plenty of room and a beautiful view out our two windows being on the 8th floor. Rooftop bar was spectacular. You pay extra for parking. It is offsite.
