    I stayed here with my brother for one night and that's all we could have handled. We actually only slept a few hours because of the sounds of crackheads screaming outside the hotel as well as the constant sirens of police turning up to deal with them.

    We should have seen the warning signs when our cab driver looked at us in shock when we told him where we were staying.

    On checked in I had hope, it seemed like it was in A REALLY bad area full of homeless people, crackheads and drug dealers but when you walk in it is quite a nice old building. The front desk lady was nice and the bell hops were great, that's where the nice things ended.

    Walking down the dimly lit hallway to our room I thought I had stepped onto the set of a horror film. Opening our door we were greeted with the smell of what can only be described as a thousand depressed souls that have stayed in there before. The room is furnished as if it has remained untouched from the ye old days and the lighting in the room was so poor I used my iPhone light when walking around.

    The bathroom had the best surprise for us though. There was mould on the tiles, the bathtub/shower combo had a dirty wet shower curtain and the toilet made a "farting" noise everytime you flushed it (this could be a plus as it provided hours of laughter)

    Don't bother using the air conditioning unless you like the sound of an aircraft in your ear and the smell of sadness coming out of it.

    On check out I had to use the foyer bathroom (which is locked with a staff key) when I got inside the cubicle I saw a syringe floating in there and that sealed the fate of this hotel. I told the staff about it and they shrugged and said "It happens all the time we can't keep them out". I would buy that excuse if it was an undermanned hotel but this place has a security guard standing a few metres from that toilet, bell desk near it and front desk staff also not far away from there as well.

    All in all it was a below average hotel, people keep saying you get what you pay for but this is just ridiculous. As far as the ageing amenities that's fine I can deal with it but there has been absolutely no reinvestment in this hotel it's just dying a slow death.

    This is my second stay at this location and my stay has been pleasant. Kazi and his staff is are very all of your needs. Kazi goes above and beyond to create a welcoming atmosphere and ensure that your stay at Hotel Whitcomb is a pleasant experience. Out of all of the places I have stayed close to my office the Hotel Whitcomb is my preference. It is convenient to the Bart, Theatre, dining and local drugstores for your last minute needs. Downstairs there is a Starbucks and the awesome Market Street Grill for fine dining. Kazi and his team make me feel welcomed daily.

  • Beware of Bernie at the front desk!! RUDE RUDE RUDE-----CRAZY

    BEWARE OF BERNIE at the front desk. He is the rudest person I've ever dealt with in any business of any kind. He is so rude I think the man is BEYOND CRAZY. (I'll explain later) I stayed here while on business for 5 days and booked multiple rooms (10) for my staff as well (whom all had horrible interactions with Bernie also). I am a history nerd and can appreciate that its a historic hotel BUT----- 1. I found a condom on the closet floor, 2. busted door locks, 3. cracked toilet seat. AND THIS WAS AN UPGRADE FROM MY FIRST ROOM WHICH WAS WORSE. The location is great and is inundated with homeless people in front and all around the area but are harmless and don't bother people. If you use Uber or LIFT for transportation you need to physically type in the address and not the Hotel name because uber-LIFT has the hotel location down the street around the corner on 9th street for the hotel location.

    I checked-in and got a room with a strong unpleasant oder and a full size bed instead of queen size as reserved at booking and was told by Bernie to check with him at 7:00 AM the following morning and that he should have the room I booked available. I wasn't mad or rude I simply thanked him and said I'd check at 7:00 AM as he directed. So at 7:00AM I called from my room (as he instructed me to do) I said "Good Morning" and was following up on my room reservation when he starts yelling at me over the phone instantaneously saying "I have over 100 people checking in today!!!! I said don't yell at me!! He replied "Try later" and hung up on me. So went down to see him in person and demanded an apology and that he didn't have to scream at me. He responded (rudely again) with "No Sir you just don't understand me because of my accent!!" I said that has nothing to do with it. Realizing that arguing with this Guy was counter-productive and that I had 4 more nights here I simply asked him how can I resolve my situation. He said he would find me a new room. Another staff member walked by and said Oh... he just hasn't had his coffee yet. I rarely give bad reviews and try and be fair but this was beyond ridiculous.

    Don't stay there People!!!! Pay more and stay elsewhere!! I can't believe how rude and emotionally unstable Berine was.

    Very apprehensive about our stay at the Hotel Whitcomb having read all the negative reports - we even tried to change the hotel, which was part of a tour package. However so glad we didn't. There is nothing wrong with the hotel - yes the area is not the best, but this is not under the control of the hotel. The entrance hall is spectacular as are the corridors. Our room was large, spotless and the bed so comfortable. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The shower pressure was weak, but this is an old hotel with all the features associated with that. Don't let the negativity of others put you off, it's a fab base to explore the city with a tram line directly outside

  • Unsanitary & rude staff

    Very nasty hotel. There was mildew in the wallpaper, and urine on the toilet seat when we arrived. Add to that a broken bed frame and a strong cleaning products smell. The staff was very unhelpful and rude; they would not even switch us another room. Hands down the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. It was so bad we had leave the property barely a few hours after checking in.
