  • Amazing

by acecarcom on 2018-02-22 07:56 pm

Hotel Whitcomb made our time in San Fransisco very enjoyable. We were looked after by Kazi Ahmed who was incredibly hospitable and made our first day in San Fran much more enjoyable than we thought it was going to be. The hotel itself was very comfortable, the only real complaint we had was that the shower was very temperamental. The location was a bit far out from the main touristy parts of town, however public transport is literally on the doorstep. Overall our stay was great.

  • A few issues but generally good value

    by David C on 2018-02-22 07:23 am

We stayed in this hotel for a business trip. For a centrally located San Francisco hotel I think it offers good value if you are not bothered by one or two things.

Good points: Not expensive. The room we had was spacious (two beds). The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The location is close to subway/bus/streetcar stops and access to all parts of the city is easy.

Bad points: San Francisco has a bad problem with homelessness and this is highly visible in the location of the hotel. Although this is not a nice thing to see I wasn't bothered or approached by any of the homeless people in the area. If you're of a nervous disposition or habitually return to the hotel on your own very late at night then this might not be the hotel for you. The internet connection was flaky and slow, in our room at least. This isn't acceptable these days. The bathroom fittings are rather dated but this didn't bother me - they work. Finally the lighting in the room was a bit dim, but this is a problem I find in a lot of hotels.

So to sum up I'd recommend this hotel if you can accept being in a somewhat insalubrious area, and it isn't important to you to have a fast internet connection in the room.

  • A Genuinely Fabulous Hotel

by truekiwiNewZealand on 2018-02-20 01:44 pm

My first ever trip to USA and San Francisco was our first stop. Travelling with two other couples we had all read the reviews about Hotel Whitcomb so were looking forward to seeing for ourselves what it was going to be like but all of us really enjoyed our stay here in this fabulous character hotel.
The staff at reception were very friendly and check in was completed easily with no issues and we all retreated to our rooms for a much needed rest after our 13hr flight.

Rooms were of a decent size and bed was comfortable and everything you needed was supplied, just run the water a bit longer to get the hot water through the old pipes but it does arrive eventually. Hair dryer supplied as is a safe for your belongings.

There is lots of activity just up the street from the Hotel but all the homeless and other unsavoury characters dont bother you at all and we all walked past them with no hassles or issues at all. It was all just part of the San Francisco experience and to be honest it is everywhere in the city, even The Hilton Hotel is amongst all the action not far away in the infamous Tenderloin district aswell so homeless and drug addicts are everywhere but they certainly didn't cause us any issues and we walked all over San Francisco during our stay there. I found it all very interesting and now that we are home San Francisco was definetly our favourite destination during our holiday.

We took advantage of the Hop On Hop Off bus which is a great way to see a lot of the city, this can be caught just opposite the SF Town Hall which is about 5 min walk from Hotel Whitcomb.
Straight across the road from Hotel is Joes Diner and we enjoyed a nice breakfast there as well as a dinner one night. We were out all day and ate at lots of different spots around the city we really only came back to hotel to sleep and shower.

I would not hesitate to recommend Hotel Whitcomb as a lovely safe place to stay it is a lovely old heritage building and was certainly a privilege to stay there.

  • Horrendous

    by tracey h on 2018-02-19 10:26 am

We arrived late afternoon, we were checked in by a rude, nonchalant male member of staff, who suggested we didnt bother with trips to the golden gate bridge and Alcatraz as these were a waste of money! We asked about getting about and he just said get a cab. Our first room on the second floor stank of damp and was tiny, so i asked to be moved , to which he moved us to the 4th floor .we opened the curtains and the window was boarded up. No natural daylight at all and 3 twenty watt bulb lamps to see we were only there for 3 nights we decided to not bother moving again as we knew it would be a waste of time. The hotel itself is classed as "historic" aka knackered, old fashioned and scruffy. I wouldnt go back to our room on my own because it felt unsafe. The lifts broke on day 2. Outside the hotel is like an apocalyptic film set. Zombie like drug users and homeless people everywhere.injecting in front of the hotel, filthy and very unsettling. They didn't bother me but would ask my husband for money and cigarettes constantly.i have noticed American clients don't seem as disgusted in the hotel as we were, overseas clients all found the hotel awful.
We hadn't choose this hotel our travel agent changed us to here last minute. Needless to say I've suggested no traveler should be put in this hellhole . Honestly if you want a nice experience of San Francisco stay away from here.its near the tenderloins area which beggars belief that people exist like this in the 21st century in America, truly truly shocking.

  • Shady location, terrible internet and so-so standards

    by John B on 2018-02-19 10:13 am

This was probably a grand hotel about 100 years ago but has sadly fallen way off. Positives:
    - clean bathroom
    - comfortable bed
    - working and quiet a/c / heating
    - star bucks on site

    - be aware the location is not the safest / cleanest (although worst i had was some rather aggressive beggars swearing at me)
    - Internet was < 1Mb in the room impossible to skype home
    - was awoken at 4.30am to someone banging on my door
    - i don't think the carpets have been cleaned in the rooms since the 1980s
    - they need to improve the lighting in the corridors

Overall I wouldn't take my family there but fine for a business trip.
