  • Disappointing; Overrated experience

I'm really shocked that this hotel has a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor after my stay here. Yes, this is a beautiful property, and my husband and I were excited to commemorate our elopement at City Hall by staying at the Presidio. This hotel is very expensive at $300-$400 a night, so this was definitely a special occasion for us to chose to stay here as we live locally in the Bay Area.

When I pay this much for a room for a single night, I expect the level of customer service to match that price. The front desk staff was very young, and we felt like we were interrupting their conversation when we checked in. Usually when checking in, staff will ask if you are from out of town, or make pleasant conversation to see how they can be helpful, whether it be recommendations for a restaurant, etc. It was more of a silent transaction, to almost hurry us along with the process. In addition, I had written in the notes of the reservation that we had gotten married that day, so I expected some acknowledgement when we checked in, or a card congratulating us in the room - ad there was nothing.

The main building was sold out so there was only availability at the Funston house. There are only four rooms at the Funston house, so if you were to rent the entire Funston building out for a family event or bridal function, I think that it would be fantastic - as there is a common space for both a dining area and living room area and patio in the back. However if you are just staying in only one of the four rooms at the Funston House, the charm is lost as the room price at $350 does not match the amenities as it is very bare.

National Park fee - I felt that this fee was rather sneaky because in my reservation it doesn't say anything about the tax unless you read the fine print, seems like they could have applied the tax so I wasn't shocked upon checking out. The room is bare, just a bed and a desk. The pillows are nice, and I like the sheets but the mattress is not very firm and is rather lumpy. As it was a fall night, we were comfortable in the room at night, although it was a little chilly. A thicker blanket would be needed for winter. The TV is small and the remote was impossible to use (Comcast) because it would turn on then immediately off. I know you are not there for the tv, but at nighttime is nice to enjoy a show or too, and we ended up watching nothing due to the non functioning remote.

Big Issue - LIGHTING. We arrived a little before 6pm, but due to day light savings it was pitch black, and very hard to see for driving/parking/walking. Since the Funston building is down the street from the main building, it is very hard to spot at night the first time you drive up. I get that it is very close, but when you are driving and its pitch black, its very frustrating to overshoot the driveway, especially since the driveway is very narrow since there are two gigantic trees on either side of the road making it a very sharp turn. Staff needs to put spotlighting on both the number and the trees at the driveway entrance, so you can easily see where you are going. Lighting is also needed in the parking lot because it was very hard to see the painted lines on the ground so you couldn't make out the spaces, plus there is a above ground utility box that you don't want to hit at one of the spots, as well as more trees. Lighting is also needed because it was impossible to see from walking from your car to the hotel entrance, we had to use our cell phone flashlight feature so that we didn't trip, which helped, but was not enough light. Now from reading this, you might think I'm old and cranky, but no I'm in my early 30s. I can't imagine my parents or grandparents navigating this at night.

We did go to the main building for wine & cheese which was a nice way to unwind when we arrived, and the breakfast in the morning was relaxing and pleasant too - no rushing around or loud noises like a lot of other hotels. If you have the opportunity to stay in one of the suites in the main building, I think this would be a unique experience, but the other rooms are a let down at the price point.

we had the best time. So much to do from this location. Lots of trails to walk on. We are very active people and walked everywhere we wanted to go. Never had to drive. We would definitely stay here again.

  • Historical Excellence

We had a lovely stay at this Inn. The 'European style' breakfast had a better spread than most buffets at other places. Our room was spotless & well appointed. Beware that both the Inn & the Funston House are on the corner of busy & busier. We had a room on the 1st floor & were on display by both the back & front. Everyone connected to their phone decided to stand in front of our room to talk. Parking is in the back & deliveries & each guest were a pane of glass away. There were no views on any side. Sitting on the porch was nice if after hours, as personnel of the park use Funston at full speed.

  • Excellent value in San Francisco

Very comfortable inn, in the historic Presidio. Due to the great location, it is easier to enjoy the western part of San Francisco and points north, in Marin and wine country. Staff is friendly and helpful.

The Inn at the Presidio has been nicely reimagined from its original roots. Our room was spacious and comfortable and, rare for San Francisco, quiet. We felt that while knowledgeable and efficient, the staff made no special effort to make the visitor feel genuinely welcome.
