Jefferson Clinton Hotel
History
The Jefferson Clinton is one of the last remaining hotels within Armory Square that dates from the 1920s. Architect Gustavus A. Young designed the 10-story hotel which opened in 1927 and cost a reputed $500,000 to build. The hotel was one of more than twenty hotels that catered to this booming downtown area and serviced the workers and patrons of the railroads that built Syracuse into an industrial center. Close proximity to the railroads also made the hotel a favorite of Vaudeville entertainers who passed through Syracuse on the circuit. The area fell into disrepair in the latter decades of the 20th century and the city itself took control of the building. With the successful use of federal tax rehabilitation credits, the hotel has been restored to its original splendor. The Jefferson Clinton prides itself on sustainable hospitality, an environmentally friendly approach to service and maintenance.
