  • A Vacation Hotel Not A Business Hotel

by DWOtruth on 2017-10-10 05:20 pm

I occasionally accompany my wife on interesting business trips and as an old Vineyard regular looked forward to the chance to hike the amazing number of trails up island while she worked. The hotels we typically travel to are standard places that cater to the business crowd. Not here. Many of the little amenities that are standard: a functioning cable system, an ice machine, a clock in the room, a business center just don't exist in what was a $300 plus a night room. The good news is that this used to be an old traditional dowdy hotel and it has had a gut renovation so the rooms are first class. The walls are still thin but the help is willing to help where they can. It's a hotel in a vacation location where they assume you sleep late, go to the beach, get sunburned, go out to dinner and drinks and go to bed. And for that they do well. Just hope it doesn't rain.

Stayed here years ago and loved it....... Amazing location. This time couldn't get over because of the storm. They very graciously refunded full price for room! I will be back!I thought they might keep or fee or worse yet just give us a voucher ---which I suppose would have been fair since weather is an "act of God." Nope full refund. Nice!

  • Recommend for Weddings!

September wedding was awesome despite TS Jose. I actually enjoyed visit to MV more because it was quiet and streets were empty the first day they resumed ferry service from Woods Hole so don't let bad weather dampen your spirits here. Room 301 was excellent. It's a corner room so even in hot muggy weather there is a cross breeze so crack the windows. Yes rooms are expensive but the tradeoff is you can walk to church, rehearsal dinner, reception, hotel, restaurants, bars, retail therapy , etc etc. No one has to get in a car so everyone spends more time socializing. Mgr. Adam made an important save and assisted with a delivery-gone-wrong. Beds were very comfortable. There are small signs of the summer construction but those who aren't obsessive-compulsive might not even notice. Will return. Just bring more cash than you plan to spend because this town is very efficient at relieving your wallet of it!

  • A very enjoyable visit

We drove from Newport, RI, to Wood's Hole, Mass, to catch a 12:30 ferry to Martha's Vineyard. We took the rental car on the ferry, which was my first experience driving onto a ship. There were plenty of men to give directions, so it was easy. We enjoyed the 45 min trip. After landing at Oak's Bluff ferry mooring, we drove to Edgartown, which is beyond charming. We found the Kelly House to be very nice and comfortable. It is located just off the water and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. We stayed two nights, walked around the town, and drove other places in the island. We would go back to stay at the Kelly House again.

  • A pig in lipstick...

by lcaloha on 2017-09-02 04:33 am

I am so disappointed by this hotel. We have been coming to the Kelley House for years, but for the last couple years it has really gone downhill.

When we started staying at the Kelley House it was a "historic colonial hotel". It had an Inn Keeper and really embraced the character and historic aspect of the hotel. It was like going back in time. They have tried to modernize the hotel and they have done a poor job of it.

I do want to start by talking about the good aspect of this hotel. The location can't be beat! It's in the heart of Edgartown and it's within walking distance to everything. The landscaping is beautiful and the reservation process was efficient and they accommodated my room request.

Moving on, the public areas of this hotel are disgusting. The carpet is dirty, the public bathroom is horrible. Dirt, grime, and who knows what else all over the floor and walls. Gross! The walls are dirty, there was a stain on the main staircase that was there the entire time (six days). They never cleaned anything. The hallways have dirt and dust balls everywhere.

The rooms have been renovated with new flooring, paint, and updated bathrooms. The bathrooms are really nice but the finish work on the renovation is terrible. The grout lines are terrible and there is paint on the tile. We had three days where they ran out of enough towels. How a hotel of this caliber runs out of linens is beyond me! The duvet was completely stained. Looked like blood or something gross. I asked for it to be changed. It was not. Nasty! The mattresses are horrible and dirty. They look as if they have been dragged across the floor during renovation. Awful!

As I said, they appear to be trying to renovate the place. They have painted over peeling wall paper. Light fixtures are missing, the carpet is trashed. The walls are scuffed and unmaintained. They renovated rooms and then put the same worn and beat up furniture back into it. When it was a colonial inn, the crooked walls and floors added character. Now it's just accentuates the disrepair of the facility. The finish work and attention to detail are lacking.

The value is not there for your dollar. It's too over priced for what is there. Until they do a proper renovation this place is going to continue to be exactly what it appears to be...a pig in lipstick.
