  • Overpaid for a terrible experience

    I have heard the hotel has closed for renovations....MUCH needed. I think we got the tail end of the hotel holding itself together by a thread. To this day, I am sick about what we paid per night to stay here for a Fall weekend. Triple what we should have. Understaffed & many staff unpolished. Can't believe Forbes has their prestigious 5 star rating attached to this property & wonder if they know what it's become.

    The girls at the front desk are the glue trying to keep it together. Totally overworked & could have used some support to say the least. Have witnessed this before. They can't do it all. Lisa Decker is fabulous, cares & certainly is what you'd expect at a 5-star resort.

    The train comes through the property pretty much so you can expect to be woken up several times a night. Bed/pillows were not comfortable. Rug had stains. Very old furniture- antiques, perhaps...but really needs an update because not all that functional. A wedding went on under our room with pounding music until way too late. Literally didn't sleep for 2 nights. Small requests made were never followed up on. Kids can't swim in the pretty infiniti pool right outside the hotel- have to use another one down the hill.

    The property itself is beautiful, but rooms need to renovated. Bottom line, they just need to start over.....rebuilding it from the inside w/ respect to decor & staff.

  • Great Visit; Taxing Service

    We stayed at Keswick Hall for a couple of days over July 4th as we have once before. The property and the pool continued to be exactly what we were looking for - beautiful and relaxing.

    Unlike previously, however, Keswick is understaffed and the staff are very junior and just learning the ropes. I'll post a separate review of Fosset's and just comment on the Villa Crawford bar/restaurant and pool service here. Villa Crawford was great, perhaps because you sat in sight of the servers. Pool service was understaffed and so we ended up walking up to Villa Crawford to order drinks to avoid waiting 45 minutes for someone to finally come by.

  • Anyone for a "spot of tea" if not an overnight?

    My husband took me here in the spring...about 2007..for high tea. Delightful.
    Just remember, not to call this Keswick, Kesick, as is done in the U.K. Yanks pronounce it with the "w": Keswick.
    It's to the east of Charlottesville, the less hilly side but lovely in its own way. Combine it with a trip to Monticello.

  • A nice getaway but heavily understaffed

    Keswick has its charm, that's for sure- the old, southern feel of the lobby and bar area give it a cozy yet elegant feel. I am curious about how it will look after its renovation. The major downside we experienced, potentially since my husband and I came for a little Christmas getaway, had to do with the hotel lacking enough staff members for the amount of people that were there (and there weren't even that many people there). We made a reservation for Christmas dinner at Keswick Hall's restaurant, Fossett's, weeks in advance since they were having a special Christmas prix fixe menu we were looking forward to. Sadly, we never got to eat that meal since the sole (!) waitress who we saw that night never came to our table. Seriously! After sitting there for about 15 minutes, we asked the busser (who was apologetic and friendly to us, which we appreciated) to please bring us water and let our waitress know we are ready to order. The waitress took a look at us, made no attempt to come greet us, but instead we saw her walk over to the other tables who already had received their meals to ask how everything tasted. We sat there, shocked, for another 15-20 minutes, still waiting for the waitress to come and take our orders. I've never experienced anything like this before. It was as though we weren't important enough to even be acknowledged. Not that it matters, but we gotten all dressed up for this meal! After about half an hour of being ignored, we decided to leave. I was so upset- a holiday dinner we had been looking forward to for days was completely ruined. We ended up sitting at the bar all dressed up for Christmas dinner, instead of having the prix mixe meal. I let the person at the front desk know about our experience, she apologized and told me the manager would be in touch with me via email. It's been nearly 3 weeks- no email from the manager. I wonder- perhaps this manager trained the waitress who never acknowledged us that night--that would make a lot of sense. I think I'm being pretty generous giving this place 3 stars given this kind of customer service.

  • Sophisticated and Charming. A Southern Gem!

    I'm not one to typically book a stay in an older hotel. I do not like a cottage inn vibe and I was a bit trepidatious that we were going to be greeted by a moth ball smell and old linens here. That was not the case at all. This resort is absolutely beautiful. Being here was like being in a wonderful Southern utopia. Sophisticatedly charming. The rooms have been beautifully updated with comfortable beds in a spacious setting. The grounds are so pretty with a stunning infinity pool and golf course. The amenities were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to use the fitness center that is actually a part of the country club. We also had a great end to a day of wine tasting at the restaurant/bar onsite. There were several very appealing options to choose from and the bartender could make absolutely anything we wanted. The service was perhaps the best part. I lost something somewhere on the property and three staff members went on a hunt to look for it. Without me asking. They just really cared and were so gracious and kind. I loved our visit here and I hope we get to come back soon!
