Overview

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is an international destination resort, upholding a timeless tradition of luxury and aloha. The resort was developed by legendary venture capitalist Laurance S. Rockefeller, after he spotted the crystal clear waters and white sands of Kauna‘oa Bay and was inspired to create a great hotel that reflected the spirit of this special place. With thoughtful sensitivity to the dramatic natural surroundings, Rockefeller’s team of experts created a stunning mid-century modern design, that in the 1960s was far ahead of its time. As a crowning touch, he installed a 1,600-piece collection of museum-quality Asian and Oceanic art and artifacts throughout the hotel - the first hotel to install art in this manner. Guest amenities at the 252-room resort include an award-winning 18-hole golf course, 11-court seaside tennis club, a beach club, island dining, homes, and villas.

The resort was lauded soon after opening, and in 1966, received the Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects and added to its most significant 150 buildings lists. Fortune named it among the “Ten Best Buildings of 1966” and Esquire named it one of the "Three greatest hotels in the world" in 1967.

While remaining firmly committed to honoring the hotel's stunning mid-century modern architecture, Mauna Kea has made extensive improvements over the years, of course to guestrooms, but so much more. Most recently, renovations have been completed in public areas, in multiple restaurant dining venues, and the hotel has added new meeting and ballroom space to remain competitive in the luxury hotel marketplace.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2016, dates back to the 1965.

Fun Fact When it opened in July 1965, with 154 guestrooms, the Mauna Kea luxury resort was the most expensive hotel ever built, at $15 million.
