Monmouth Plantation

History
During the golden age of Natchez, this imposing 1818 Greek Revival mansion was the residence of General John A. Quitman, a Mexican War hero and early governor of Mississippi. He purchased the house in 1826 as a gift for his new wife, Eliza Turner. The Quitmans entertained frequently and visitors included such notable figures as Jefferson Davis and Henry Clay. Damaged during the Civil War, the house gradually fell into disrepair after the death of Quitman’s last descendant. Monmouth was purchased by Ron and Lani Riches in 1977, lovingly restored and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
