Newagen Seaside Inn

Newagen Seaside Inn in SouthportNewagen Seaside Inn in Southport

Overview

The Newagen Seaside Inn’s casual elegance epitomizes the spirit of Down East hospitality. Situated on 19 acres at the south end of Southport Island, the inn offers accommodations in both the main inn and guest cottages, all of which afford stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Writer Rachel Carson asked that her ashes be scattered nearby on the ocean’s edge. Many of her observations in the book Silent Spring are based upon her experiences here. The inn is open seasonally from late May to mid-October. Frommer's Guidebook said, "Guests return each year to the 19-acre grounds filled with decks, gazebos and walkways that border on the magical. It's hard to convey the magnificence of the ocean views, maybe the best of Inn's in Maine."

In 1943 the original Inn was destroyed by fire. Local lore says it was deliberately set as a sign to signal German U-boats stationed offshore that it was safe to come ashore.
