  • Afternoon Lunch

    by 529kathleend on 2017-10-12 03:57 pm

My hubby and I enjoyed an absolutely delightful lunch there yesterday.
Our appetizers were wonderful and plentiful - he had a potato/corn cream soup, I had a delicious beet salad. Both were fresh and very well made.
For a main course - he enjoyed a Reuben on a pretzel roll, I a grilled pulled short rib and cheese sandwich. Both were served with outstanding french fries.
We couldn't finish them as they were quite large so we took home great doggy bags!
The service was excellent - thank you Mary Jo - we were never rushed and enjoyed everything completely.
The Castle was very impressive and an outstanding afternoon.

Full day wedding. Everything was first class. The building and grounds are beautiful. Food was fabulous. Sea bass was great. American and Indian foods were terrific....drinks also. My wife said it was like Cinderella.

  • Beautiful Property with Poor Managment

by RDining on 2017-10-02 12:24 am

At first glance, this is such a pleasant surprise to discover in Long Island, NY. Who would have ever thought that there are castles in the US. It was built around the Great Depression and comes with some interesting history. Today, Oheka Castle is used as a hotel and venue for weddings and events. It has a limited number of rooms that have been renovated. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the castle itself is reminiscent of French Chateaux.
We were at Oheka for a wedding and stayed there overnight in one of the larger rooms. However the managerial staff was so rude and obnoxious that the castle seemed so out of place. Our room was over $400 per night but it really did not feel it was worth it. These days for $400, you get so many amenities in most places; from a coffee machine in the room to free snacks or just simple courtesy. When we called the desk in the morning to ask for a late check out, the person who answered only gave us 30 minutes and was so rude on the phone. No good mornings or how are yous, but a belligerent attitude that reminds you that after all you are really not in a castle. From the welcome to the check-out, the people at the desk all were so unfriendly. It was as if they wanted your money but didn't want you. And in the morning after a wedding that ended so late, the landscapist with his lawn mower and blower started his rumble right under our room at 7 am. You would think that a level of training and sophistication would be required for working at a luxury hotel or "castle", but there was none. You really don't get the value for the price this place charges. This place has great potential but the management needs to be retrained. I don't recommend this place to stay.

  • Surprise Castle

    by globalwife2017 on 2017-10-01 10:26 am

I was born and raised on Long Island in NY and I lived there for 33 years; so, I wonder if you could image how surprising it was for me to find out that there was a castle, right in my midst, that I never even heard about growing up!

Tucked away in Huntington- overlooking the Long Island Sound, the castle and the original estate of Otto Kahn (whom legend has it- is the man in the Monopoly game) stands this beautifully refurbished and historic landmark.

My most recent stay in the castle was in August of this year, and I have been returning to the Castle whenever possible since March of 2011. It is safe to say that the Castle is worth returning to! The guests' rooms are spacious and very comfortable and the common areas within the castle are open to you, providing an event is not going on at the time. My favorite room is the Library; this room is richly decorated and has large windows which allow natural light to stream through, along with French doors that lead out to the garden. You can even arrange to have a private, intimate dinner by the fireplace there. I have had the opportunity to share a delightful meal in this elegant atmosphere and it is a memory I will cherish always.

The new owner of this domicile is friendly and welcoming, and you are made to feel like you are his special guest. Both The Bar and Restaurant are open to the public so you can enjoy the ambiance of the castle experience even if you are not a resident. I have had the opportunity to invite my family to join my husband and I for wonderful meal, followed by an after-dinner stroll through the garden, and later entertain them in the library without interruption. As long as there is not an event going on at the time, the castle truly feels like it belongs to you.

My only bit of advice is to plan well in advance and secure reservations, as the castle is a perfect setting for weddings and it is difficult to get a room during wedding season. If you happen to be planning a wedding keep in mind that any betrothed couple would have a fairy tale wedding at Oheka.

  • Historic tour of Oheka Castle

    by Elaine I on 2017-09-28 07:50 am

The tour was extremely well done. It was informative, well-presented and entertaining all at the same time. Our docent was easy to understand -- we are now well educated about the history of Oheka Castle. Lunch followed and was superb.
