Overview

The Publick House Historic Inn opened in 1771 under the leadership of Colonel Ebenezer Crafts in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. It is now one of New England’s greatest historical inns. In close proximity to Boston, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, the Inn was built after Crafts won the land from a local doctor in a card game. The Inn had several uses over the years, including being a boarding house for young women, and a post for soldiers en route to training during World War II.

The Inn features three spaces in which guests can stay overnight; the Historic Lodge, the Country Motor Lodge, and Chamberlain House all have special features and amenities that allow for guests to make a choice based on their needs. Each house provides air-conditioning/heat, premium bedding, complimentary toiletries, and a daily newspaper. The Inn has two restaurants and a bakery shop which provide hearty meals in the traditional New England style, as well as decadent sweet treats known throughout the region. Tours, festivals, and other exciting activities are held on the grounds of the Publick House and guests are encouraged to participate. It is also a wonderful location for corporate events and meetings as well as traditional, romantic weddings with eight different meeting spaces and gorgeous grounds for outdoor events.

As part of the 13 original colonies, Massachusetts is home to many historic landmarks and the Publick House Historic Inn is one of them. The Inn is close to attractions such as The Big E, hayrides, corn mazes, a nearby year round community theater, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. This landmark hotel is the perfect representation of hospitality and would make an excellent stop on any visit to New England.

Publick House Historic Inn, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2018, dates back to 1771.
