  • Total Indulgence for Every Sense AKA Royal Treatment at Royal Palms

by AZTakeahike on 2017-10-16 07:13 pm

Simply turning off Camelback Road into the Royal Palms property plunged me into another world. In the shadow of majestic Camelback Mountain, the cobblestone courtyard surrounded by palms (and yes, a Royal Palm tree), Mexican tile lining paths and a fountain, and a Johnny-on-the-Spot gentleman providing complimentary valet parking only hinted at delights to come. Eighteen of us from our neighborhood just across the Valley had come to Royal Palms for a 'Celebration of Friendship'. We had reserved the poolside cabanas for the day.

Poolside service was as attentive and lavish as if we had reserved the Presidential Suite. We floated in the pool, had facials in the Spa, meandered the grounds with mature and lush vegetation, prowled the bars, restaurants, dining alcoves, noshed on complimentary beverages, guacamole and chips, and feasted on salads and sandwiches from the kitchen. Staff was knowledgeable about the history of the original 1929 home and was eager to point out special features or unusual specimens of trees and flowers.

At day's end, we showered and dressed in the pool dressing rooms as we were going to the theater. Our package included full use of the Spa and pool dressing rooms.

What did all the additional pampering and sensory service cost? Though we each tipped intermittently as we received a particular service, I didn't feel staff was working or hustling for tips...they seemed intent on insuring we were having a good time.

With Royal Palms Inn as a backdrop, all 18 of us thoroughly enjoyed our 'Celebration of Friendship'. We left feeling rejuvenated individually and as a group. We each pledged to return for a romantic weekend with our spouse (or our spice)!

  • Lovely resort - very quaint and old world feel

by SarahJSweetpea on 2017-10-13 08:39 am

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights. The hotel had a very old world feel. It was cozy and beautiful. Just lacking something I can't quite put my finger on. The staff was wonderful, very attentive and welcoming. I think the next time we go to Scottsdale, we will stay in a place a bit more modern - just not our style, but very nice.

  • beauriful boutique hotel

by KarynLS on 2017-10-12 12:50 am

Royal palms by Hyatt has the feel of a luxury Mediterranean boutique hotel. A tiled fountain or beautiful courtyard is around every corner. Although I was with my daughter and met some cousins I will definitely go back with my husband.

    Owner Response

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! Our resort is known as a romantic getaway, but we definitely offer options for the whole family! From champagne at check in to romantic seating property-wide, we would love to welcome both you and your husband back!

  • Beautiful Grounds but Noisy Rooms

by Verovee on 2017-10-09 04:10 pm

I spent two nights here as a splurge to myself after spending a week at a conference in nearby Glendale. The grounds are lovely, the staff is nice and responsive and i don't regret spending the money, but it is an awful lot of money for a place that was not that relaxing. I was told that I had been upgraded when I checked in, and that I now had a patio. I accepted this happily but am now in retrospect confused as to why I would want two double beds when I had booked a King room. The beds were sort of small and while they seemed comfortable when i first laid down, I did not sleep well. Hard to say how much of this was due to the smallish, overly soft bed and how much was due to the constant noise. I could hear every step the people upstairs took and I dont know if it was a large party or just a particularly heavy footed one but their footsteps were so loud and hard that the lighting fixtures in my bathroom shook. This went on from early in the morning until late into the night. There was also a seemingly large group in the room next to me (I was in room 208 in Montavista), whose room was connected to mine by a door in the wall. I could hear every word and laugh from this room; it sounded as if they were *in* my room. Luckily that was only a problem on Saturday night. Every time a door in the hallway closed, my door would shake. Both mornings groups were up at six am or earlier, talking in the hallway, loudly for extended periods of time. When the guests were not talking loudly in the early mornings, the cleaning staff was. Guests can be unpredictable, they cannot be controlled. But the cleaning staff should know better. I mentioned the noise from upstairs to the reception staff and was told that the rooms were just recently renovated and they should not be so loud. But they were. He offered to call the guests to ask them to keep it down but I said that wasn't necessary; they did not sound like they were having a party just like the floors/ceilings could be better constructed. The front staff by the way was uniformly nice, and responsible. I had a lot of questions and they answered them all with patience and kindness. There is also a tasty punch in the reception area that I drank more of than I probably should have. A few more things about the room - the patio was nice but it would have been nicer to have a view of the fountains in the courtyard rather than a wall constructed around the fountains. It would be convenient to be able to leave the room through the patio area. The lamps in the room were odd and one of them was difficult to turn on and off. A charging center for phones and devices would be great, there was a USB port on one lamp that did not work consistently. The bathroom is large and nice, with a big tub and separate shower, but the water pressure in the shower was not great. And why was it so hard to get into the mini fridge? It had a lock on it. I didnt want anything from this overpriced fridge, but I had a drink I brought with me I wanted to store. I also had my key card expire half a day early and I could not get into my room (this was quickly resolved) and on my last afternoon someone on staff attempted to barge into my room but I had the chain on the room and after opening it and not being able to enter, they left. I never found out what that was about. I ate several meals at the resort, including lunch by the pool, breakfast at T Cooke's and dinner at mix up. I was told the food at Mix Up was from the same kitchen as T Cooke's, which would explain the high prices. The setting, outdoors by a fountain, was relaxing and pretty, but the "signature Branzino" was bland. The brussels sprouts were very good, as was my cocktail. But nothing was outstanding for an 85 dollar meal for one person. Service was attentive. The meal by the pool was good and the attendants there are nice if a bit frazzled. the pool is small, but would be fine except that in the time i spent there it was always full of children, and you couldnt swim without dodging them and a dozen floats and noodles. There is a seating area where you get misted with cool mist, which was a nice addition. I used the spa for a massage and a pedicure, neither of which I found particularly good, but the prices were reasonable. And the spa itself is a nice setting with multiple areas to sit and relax, both indoors and outdoors. In colder temperatures many of these areas have working fireplaces. The spa staff was also very nice and accommodating. And I was able to get appointments on short notice. However, the phone in the room didnt work to call the spa. I tried several times before giving up. I dont know if the phone worked otherwise because that is the only time i tried using it.
overall, I enjoyed my time here. The staff was wonderful. The grounds really are gorgeous. (You do have to dodge wedding parties constantly but that is not necessarily a big deal.) But I am giving this a four instead of five rating because at these prices you should be able to relax in your room and I was not able to do that because of the noise. Perhaps it is quieter in other areas without hallways, like the casitas?
