Tucked away in the quaint town of Safety Harbor aptly called “The Health Giving City”, the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa has remained a highly revered refuge for rest, relaxation and renewal for nearly 100 years. Recognized as Florida’s first spa, this iconic estate-like resort rests on 22 neatly manicured acres offering 175 spacious, well-appointed guestrooms and suites, stunning Swarovski crystal chandelier-lit ballrooms embellished with rich fabrics, a cozy lobby lounge along with casual and fine dining. Central to the resort’s storied past and today’s international popularity is the acclaimed spa built on the ancient natural mineral springs that run directly beneath the resort.
Through the years, Safety Harbor has been known as the Florida destination “where healing waters flow.”™ Indian shell mound builders inhabited what is now Safety Harbor area almost 2,000 years ago, followed by the Tocobaga Indians and eventually the Seminoles. These early residents believed the mineral springs held mystical powers to help perpetuate youth and heal the sick.
In 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto reached the shores of this very site and discovered five natural springs. Believing he had found the legendary “Fountain of Youth” somehow missed by Ponce de Leon, De Soto established a camp here, naming Safety Harbor’s mineral springs Espiritu Santo Springs, or “Springs of the Holy Spirit.” Today, this mystical place is known as Safety Harbor Resort and Spa.
In the early 1900s, the natural spring water was bottled and shipped to eager customers worldwide for its curative properties. A practice referred to as “Taking of the Waters” claimed to cure a variety of physical ailments, restore youth and vitality.
