St. James Hotel MN
The St. James Hotel opened in 1875 as 11 civic-minded Red Wing businessmen saw the need for upscale lodging due to a burgeoning primary wheat market. The hotel was and still is decorated in the Victorian style, a style prevalent at the time of its opening. Its downtown location provided a destination for travelers both by riverboat, railroad, and horse. The St. James Hotel offers magnificent views of the limestone bluffs, the Mississippi River, and historic downtown Red Wing.
The Italianate building was a modern marvel at the time with features such as steam heat, hot and cold running water, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. The hotel became a hub for local activity almost overnight; the railroad even went so far as to adjust their schedules to allow their passengers an opportunity to dine at the St. James. President Rutherford B. Hayes even gave a speech from the Veranda and sampled the famous cuisine.
The St. James was privately owned for nearly 100 years until the property, in need of refurbishing, was purchased by the Red Wing Shoe Company in 1975. After a two year renovation, the hotel reopened its doors with a new Riverside section of guestrooms, a remodeling of the historic section guestrooms and a shopping courtyard. The hotel now has 62 guestrooms, most of which are named after a famous 19th century riverboat that plied the Mississippi River. It also features 3 distinctive shops, a spa, a coffee shop serving Starbucks, and three unique restaurants continuing the St. James tradition of excellent cuisine.
The hotel retains its historic charm while also staying up-to-date with modern amenities such as wireless Internet access and brand new mattresses and linens. The famous St. James accommodates business travelers, corporate events, weddings and receptions, social activities, as well as couples and families looking for a unique getaway from a fast-paced world.
The town got its name from Chief Red Wing, a Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux whose emblem was a scarlet swan's wing.
