  • Lovely Historic Hotel

    by Aaron G on 2017-10-15 06:14 pm

If you do not have a love for old buildings and nostalgia you may not want to stay here. I loved the hotel and my experience; the d?cor and ambiance do a wonderful job to take you back to the old days. I stayed in a "premium" room although I think all this meant was the room was larger. If you expect to receive luxury accommodations you will be disappointed. The standard rates are overpriced considering the amenities but I will definitely return.

  • Great nostalgic and romantic Hotel

A nicely run and restored property which is full of antiques and amenities. There is free onsite parking and several choices for shopping and dining. Clean, comfortable, convenient and easy to find. It is centrally located.

  • Fall

Decided to drive to Red Wing from St. Paul on Hwy 61 thru Hastings on a Sunday. Too early for the leaf change, still a nice drive. Hwy 61 is in excellent condition. Took the 316 cutoff in Hastings. Have been to the St.James for the excellent Sunday brunch, and first time getting a room. Large room, queen bed, which could have used a ladder to get into. Huge mattress, very comfortable once in the darn thing. Room faced the river and train tracks. Ooooh, I hate train horns. Oh well, not too bad once after a couple Black Russians at Jimmys. Veranda dining room was good. Service was spotty but friendly. Food was good and a nice view of the river and parking ramp. Check in was friendly. Manager responded to my room comments immediately, impressive.

  • Great Quaint Hotel

We stopped at the St. James Hotel while on a WI road trip. Beautiful appointed hotel and rooms. Our room was very clean and the linens are like sleeping on clouds. I came home and will try and order some for myself. Rooms are small but comfy. We were upgraded to a king without even asking which we thought was nice. Friendly check in staff also.
We had dinner in Jimmys on the 5th floor. Great Happy hour and the food was very good.
The only reason I'm giving this hotel a 4 is because the air conditioner was very noisy and turned on and off all night. The great sheets made up for it though.?
Would highly recommend the St. James Hotel.

  • Just Okay

The St. James Hotel, while certainly historic, was an okay place to stay for one night, in my view. The hotel plays up its historic nature, but I felt that aside from the fresh-looking carpet in the common areas, the hotel is quite tired and could use some deep TLC. For the high price of a room, I wasn't expecting stained carpet, a bit of peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling, or cushions on chairs that were droopy. Some may find all that part and parcel with a "historic" hotel, but again, it just seemed tired. The room was clean, but unfortunately hairs and dust from previous guests lingered on top of the heater in the bathroom along with other spots throughout the room. One part of the window treatment was laying perched against the wall, likely forgotten after broken previously. The bed was comfortable enough, and I appreciated the turndown service, complimentary bottled water, and iron. All staff I encountered were all cheery and polite. Would I stay here again? Likely no unless drastically cheaper (which the St. James was not) than the chain hotels/motels nearby.
