The Castle on the Hudson

History
The Castle on the Hudson was the dream of General Howard Carroll, a well-respected newspaperman, playwright and businessman, who bought the land with the intention of building a family residence. Noted New York architect Henry Kilburn designed the structure, but it was Carroll's idea to build the 45-room castle in the style of Norman fortifications found in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. When the structure was completed in 1910, the results were nothing less than spectacular.
Despite its grand scale, the Carroll family considered the castle to be their home and lived here until 1940, entertaining a wide sweep of celebrities and politicians who would make the one-hour pilgrimages from Manhattan each week. After leaving the family's ownership, the property served as a boy's boarding school and later, home to an investment business. In 1996, the castle was transformed into a luxury hotel, offering every modern convenience in a grand historic setting.
