  • Visit the Choo Choo, Donât stay in the Train cars

by awhsnow on 2018-01-15 10:35 am

We visited the Choo Choo in January and stayed in a Pullman car for one night. Really, really run down. Stained carpet, holes in carpet, old mattresses, chipped paint, broken toilet porcelain, broken/chipped blinds, etc.

It is worth going to the Choo Choo, the trains just aren't worth it. I travel 80 nights a year and the room is one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in.

    Frothy Monkey is great.

  • A slice of history

It was great to see the iconic steam engines and carriages (now used as hotel rooms) and to admire the very grand lobby in the old train station building. The food outlets were very good and no complaints there. Only gripe is that the rooms in the outbuildings are very shabby and need redecorating, especially the bathroom in my room which had definitely seen better days. Also, the ground floor rooms have sliding patio doors and are right opposite another row of rooms. Therefore no privacy unless the thick curtains are pulled once the lights are put on. Also, quite offputting that you can hear people walking past your windows at night. Other than that though, a good experience.

  • All Aboard!

This was an adventure from the time we walked into the historic lobby which was once a train station. We stayed in a boxcar which the kids thought was amazing! There was a dining car, which we didn't get a chance to visit, but the onsite restaurant was very nice and kids eat free.

  • Help preserve American History while staying at a great hotel!

On the first day of 2018 I felt very fortunate to travel to Chattanooga once again and stay at this national treasure, the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel. I had been here many times between 2009 and 2012 when I was on tour as saxophonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. I was very excited to see how my "Choo Choo" was doing nowadays. I have scored the hotel experience as a whole as a 4 out of 5 stars and not 5 out of 5 mostly due to the fact that I am honest with my reviews and it is not a modern luxury hotel due to its physical limitations and therefore lack of certain amenities i.e. spa/valet/room service etc. Nonetheless I had a most memorable and positive experience equal to a hotel of the highest caliber. Upon arrival I had phoned to confirm room assignment and had spoken with Bailey at the front desk who was courteous, efficient and sincere about the fact that no single beds were available due to remodeling however she would try her best and keep an eye out. Upon check in I met Ashley who was most outgoing and friendly in helping me plan my day in Chattanooga and had a single bed assignment after all for me. The fact that they actually went out of their way to ensure guest satisfaction spoke volumes of the quality of service the Choo Choo is instilling upon its guests. I was very happy to see the rooms are upgraded with modern furniture and framed photographs dealing with the history of the train station. Upon revisiting the entire property Matthew on staff was kind enough to show me an updated family cart on the train and it was awesome! Very vintage look with great heat working in the winter and space for a family with children. I was touched to see how the community has stepped in to help preserve the legacy of the first railway to provide passenger service from the north to the south beginning back in the 1880s. The trains parked onsite are a part of American history and must be protected. The choo choo now hosts:
    A comedy club
    A live music venue
    Two upscale restaurants
    A Southern Boutique
    Residential apartments
    An ice skating rink
And more business on the horizon. Thanks to these new innovative approaches the hotel will be around for generations to come and the legacy of track 2-9 and Glenn Miller will live on with this beautiful preservation of Americana. Thanks to Bailey, Ashley, Matthew and all the staff for an awesome stay!
The shower was hot with good pressure. The carpet was new. The bed was hard which I like a firm mattress. The chairs in the room were nice and a padded footstool was handy for luggage. The TV had hdmi with open access. There was ultra fast 9MB/sec. wifi that was open and the heated pool was warm and clean for your enjoyment. Coffee at the frothy monkey was fresh and delicious with lots of coffee options and the hotel maintains its 1930s image of a true classic. Parking onsite was cheap and secure $7 compared to $40 in miami beach and finally they do not hold your card hostage for a hold like most hotels. Do support the hotel by staying there if only for a night. You will not regret it!

  • Chattanooga Choo Choo is a must see!

    by travelingmama121 on 2017-12-31 07:28 am

Traveling through Chattanooga with 7 year old grandson and only had limited time to see one local attraction. We chose this and so glad we did!!
This hotel/historic site is an easy off/on the interstate to get to. It is a big, beautiful old train terminal, completely restored to its original grandeur. The lobby is HUGE with tons of marble and a domed ceiling. All was decorated for the holidays with a massive Christmas tree in the center!
Just outside was the famous train we came to see--I expected just the engine but it is much more than that!
Another surprise was an ice skating rink and we loved watching the people skate! Also saw the long passenger train that has been converted into private hotel rooms--really unique! There are regular hotel rooms as well. To finish up there's also a nice gift shop with all things train and much more!!
Will plan a longer stop here again one day to explore the rest of this area. Lots of cute and quaint little shops down there, along with the Tennessee Aquarium which also sounds like a must see!
