I would have given 5 stars, had it not been for a little billing dispute. I discovered well after I returned home that there was an extra $100 charged at the time of the check-in. The hotel accounting dept claimed that it was a mistake by my credit card company since it was supposed to be just authorization and told me to contact my cc company. I know it is pretty standard for hotels to keep the cc info for incidentals, but this was an actual charge according to my cc company, who then proceeded to give me immediate credit before they were going to inquire the hotel about this. I have not followed up on who was actually at fault, but it seems odd that the cc company would make a unilateral error like this and the accounting dept did not even have a record that they received $100 when it clearly showed up on my cc statement. Furthermore, the person I dealt with in accounting did not return my initial phone call, and while not rude, was rather aloof, and I may be nitpicking here, but a customer calling with a billing dispute is already annoyed therefore that is when customer service should be at its best.
Anyway, the stay at this hotel was flawless.
The location is excellent - it took us 5 minutes to walk down Q St and reach the Dupont Circle metro station. It is in a very quiet and elegant neighborhood.
The stately historical building has been superbly decorated in a very classy way, reflecting the history of the capital and nation, which was well above my expectations. The lobby, however, is almost non-existent (photos may be deceiving), but that did not bother us.
The room amenities are excellent. The complimentary wifi worked very well. The gym is well equipped, complete with chilled water and towels.
The front desk and housekeeping staff we came across were very friendly and helpful.
I would not hesitate to stay here again, assuming the billing error was a rare accident. If you want a quiet and elegant hotel with a friendly staff at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong here.
We were pleased to read you enjoyed your accommodations, services, and overall visit and we thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are sorry for any inconvenience you endured with billing. Without all the details on hand it is hard to comment in this form, but, please know that an incidental charge is simply a hold that is placed on your credit card, and if not charges are incurred, the amount is released by us, after which your bank will then process their release. If you would like to discuss further, please don't hesitate to reach out directly. Thank you again, and we'd love to welcome you back.
If younger looking for a "4 star" pampering hotel, this is not it. Older hotel, has nothing to do, not a welcoming lobby or rooms. Tv is not fully HD, analog most channels.
The best thing is the location of the hotel.
Many guests do enjoy the feel and look of our historic hotel, but it's unfortunate that we weren't a perfect fit for you. Thank you for taking the time to share your impressions and feedback. We hope you'll give us another chance in the future to welcome you back.
We stayed for 2 nights at the fairfax at the end of March and really enjoyed it. The check in was great and even got an upgraded room, cocktail vouchers and complimentary breakfast one of the mornings because it was our anniversary. The room was lovely. The staff are really friendly and the hotel is in a great location . Would recommend this hotel to anyone .

Small boutique hotel feel which we like. Room was very nice traditional decorated. Best hotel shower ever! Spotless housekeeping. Quiet, reserved atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff at front desk and doorman valet. Delicious breakfast buffet priced reasonably to start the day prior to touring. Very convenient 4 minute walk to Dupont Metro Station where you hop on to tour anywhere. Will definitely stay there again and not even look at another hotel.

I cannot remember a more pleasurable check-in experience! As a frequent traveler, I truly appreciate seeing a smiling, friendly face after a tiring journey and know the first encounter at a hotel often sets the tone of an entire trip. "Q" made our complicated reservation effortless and we immediately felt welcomed. I am looking forward to the rest of the weekend matching our initial encounter.
