  • Comfortable, Charming Property

    I stayed at the Mission Inn Hotel for 3 nights while attending a conference at the nearby Riverside Convention Center. My "deluxe room" was located on the first floor, which is actually the second floor (confusing!). The room was spacious and had tons of character. Features included a walk-in closet, window bench seat, small patio, and alcove with a stained glass window. There was a small desk, and toiletries were of good quality.

    The hallways, stairwells, and communal areas were comfortable, well appointed, and had lots of character. One of the best parts of staying here was being able to check out the various rooms, walkways, and overlooks throughout the property. I like to think of it as the Winchester Mystery House without the kitschy backstory.

    While I was very happy with my stay, I do have a couple complaints: First, the bathroom lacked any counter space and headroom in the shower was a little tight. Second, the charge for Wi-Fi in the rooms seemed unnecessary. Nonetheless, if you ever find yourself in Riverside, by all means make it a point to stay here. Or at least come for the tour!

  • Interesting architecture, but beware of internet charges and 100% polyester sheets!

    The hotel looks stunning. Old Spanish mission style architecture. Some parts are not well kept (curtains in my room had holes), but overall it leaves an impression. Very interesting.
    BUT, the sheets are 100% polyester, and so it was difficult to sleep with sparks of electricity every time you turn. Moreover, I got charged for internet fees, even though I was "forced" to join the Stash Hotel Rewards club to avoid internet fees. I was promised at the front desk that internet fees will automatically be waved. Came home and saw the charges of $9.95/day for two days I was using the internet. Called the hotel, and they said they would review the bill and call me back. I am still waiting ..... How disappointing. Will definitely not stay there again. Sneaky tactics.

  • What a Surprise!

    We booked this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews as we were passing through Riverside and needed a place to stay for one night. We knew nothing about the hotel, and we were pleasantly surprised on the history of the hotel, and also the festival of lights that takes place during the holiday season. Although, we did not get to see the actual festival, the hotel was setting up for the holiday season, and many of the lights were being tested during our stay so we got to see all the holiday decorations without the crowds. Our room was excellent. The beds were divine. I did not want to get out of bed in the morning, and I'm a morning rise and shine person. We will definitely stay at this hotel when passing through Riverside in the future, and for more then one night. This is our third stay at a Stash hotel, and we will look for them in our future travels.

  • Hotel is great -- politics of the owners is subpar

    First off: the hotel is absolutely stunning. No doubt about it.

    However, if you look at the "about the innkeepers" page, you'll find that the owners (the Roberts) are DEEPLY imbedded in right-wing politics -- to the point that Kelly Roberts, whose only political experience seems to be having won "Cupcake Wars," was apparently nominated in August to be the Ambassador to Slovenia. Sorry but that reeks to high heaven. I had to stay here for a wedding, but I made sure to give this place as little of my money as possible outside of that.

    I've also heard that they pay their many workers minimum wage. Typical Republican BS: let's keep the little people down.

    One final note: the housekeeping staff knocked on our door at 8 AM to clean the room. 8 AM! make sure to put that little sign out, folks...

  • short on service, great on history

    Even though the posted check-in time is 4:00, when we arrived at 1:00 our room was ready. Check-in was smooth enough. The initial "wow" factor was nice. A Spanish Mission-style archway and brightly colored macaws welcome guests. As it is mid-November, many of the Christmas decorations are in place to enjoy without the crush of crowds. For history buffs, the hotel tour at their museum is reasonably priced and offers entrance to nooks and crannies that otherwise would go unseen.

    This hotel is on the National Registry of Historic Places, consequently, I was prepared for uneven floors and perhaps some street noise. However, at over $300.00 per night I was not prepared for the following "hiccups". We visited the spa and were told that because of high demand for services on the weekends, there were not enough lockers for everyone, and consequently, if we wanted a treatment, we would need to come down through the hotel in the bath robes provided in the room. This might have been acceptable; but there were no bath robes in our room. Also, with two queen beds, there should have been a bench at the foot of each bed. One bed had a bench. One did not. The bed linens, were exquisite; however, the mattresses felt more like something one would find at a rescue mission, not the "Mission Inn Hotel & Spa". The end result was like putting lipstick on a pig's snout. In the morning, before checking out, we decided to spend some time in the jacuzzi. We planned to get to the jacuzzi by 10:30, spend about a half hour there, then go back to the room, shower, dress and comfortably check-out at noon. When we got to the pool, there were no pool towels. Using the house phone, I called housekeeping and requested pool towels. After waiting about ten minutes, we still had no towels. No problem. Since the pool is adjacent to the spa, I thought I'd go to the spa and snag a couple towels. The spa receptionist told me I could not have any towels from them; and that I needed to call housekeeping. I went to the front desk and asked if they could call housekeeping and help me get some pools towels. I went back to the pool and we waited another ten minutes. The pool towel shortage might have been understandable had it been 5:00 in the afternoon and 110? outside. At 10:30 in the morning with just one swimmer and two jacuzzi guests in 72? weather, there was no excuse for the lack of pool towels. About thirty minutes later, I called on the house phone again. About that time a gentlemen in a suit rolled a bin full of "mostly dry" pool towels. We spent about 20 minutes in the jacuzzi, then hurried to shower, change, pack and check-out. Check-out was smooth, however, the unorganized valet parking was quite another story. My daughter took the valet ticket to the counter and paid for the valet parking. We watched and waited while 10-15 people in front of us all got in their cars and drove away. When we saw people who had arrived after us drive away, my daughter went to the valet parking stand to see if there was a problem. The valet had mixed up her ticket with someone else. In the end, the keys to her car were found still hanging on the hook at the stand. Between the pool towel fiasco and the valet parking mishap, we left feeling discouraged, NOT refreshed. Hiccups when traveling are common and even expected; however, at over $300/night, these things should NOT have happened.
