  • Almost Perfect Wedding Party Stay

    by SK8CJ on 2018-04-18 10:24 am

I was the Best Man for a Wedding held on property last weekend, I am not a fan of California but this was a game changer for me. The Mission is an amazing place to stay and visit and overall I was very impressed as was my wife who travels the world first class as an assistant to a major musical artist. Our first challenge was that there really is no early check in and we were there for a wedding and had the rehearsal at 2 pm so it would have been nice to check in early and relax. That being said we did get into our room by 330. The property is MAJESTIC and I loved exploring all the areas and floors. The pool area was very relaxing and I wanted a little more time but we were to busy. Our room was pleasant facing the Riverside outdoor shop corridor. A little noisy at night but tolerable. WOW the bed was AMAZING and the sheets were FANTASTIC. Overall the stay was great, had a few challenges with the front desk and the catering dept. but I would stay again. We did eat at the Mexican restaurant that was better than average and we did have cocktails by the lobby where they had a musician playing. My only issue was there is no sundries so CVS was a brisk walk for stuff.

  • If you are in the area you should try to stay here, if you can't VISIT this one of a kind historic place.

    by RjF-LA on 2018-04-17 09:06 pm

I have stayed here a few times and it is truly a special gem. If I can't stay here because it is sold out or other reasons, I try to visit. It has a rich history and is a beautiful hotel. Every nook and carney has new surprises. If you are looking for a modern place, this is not for you. If you like to explore and appreciate the arts this is for you!

  • Trying to be a 5-star Property but Needs an Upgrade from the 3.5-stars It Really Is

    by Neha P on 2018-04-15 06:31 pm

The Mission Inn is a pretty property. It's a heritage hotel and a registered historic landmark. The hotel has an interesting history and is a nice getaway in Riverside. There are lots of little alcoves and courtyards and chapels and things to explore as you walk around the property. And in lieu of a grassy green space, there are lots of potted plants all around the property. The pool and hot tub are great!

The front desk staff is great, as is housekeeping. The bell captains and valets are hustling!

So, why the 3.5-star review? Well, the property sits in the middle of downtown and is always crowded. It claims to be an oasis, and it's not really. It also claims to be a five-star resort, and the AAA diamonds and illustrious guests it's received proves it for the times they were awarded. But the glory is fading. The rooms on the Mission Inn Avenue side of the property are all aging and need refurbishing. We were initially assigned to room 340, and it was a small, plainly decorated room with low-feeling ceilings. We left the room to get dinner at the not-worth-it-at-all Las Campanas restaurant, and when we came back, the room smelled like sewage. After we called, housekeeping came by with a can of Febreeze and I said that would not be enough. The maid said to them just talk to the front desk staff. We went down and the receptionist and manager were way more gracious and immediately moved us to room #335. But if you're in one of the rooms in the front of the hotel, they'll be the older ones. The rooms in the back of the hotel are much nicer, so be aware when you're booking.

The bell captains and valets - while hustling - never smiled. Not once while we were there for the weekend. And the spa is pushed on you until you really just don't want to be there, especially since the reception staff at the spa was not very warm and welcoming. (The phone staff was really nice, just not the people there in-person.)

The restaurants are beautiful but the food is BELOW AVERAGE. Las Campanas messed up our order and the food was served cold on very hot plates. Mission Inn Restaurant served the same way - cold food on very hot plates - prepared in an average way. For example, I ordered Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon & Spinach. The English muffin wasn't toasted. The Hollandaise sauce was oily. And the spinach as raw instead of sauteed. I'm a decent cook and know the difference between well-prepared food and average food. This is a resort that hypes its restaurants and spa and doesn't deliver.

Also, we were exploring the property, which again, the staff encourage you to do, and came across the chapel. We went in and were told we couldn't be there because there was a PAID TOUR in there. The docent was actually rude about it, literally saying you can't be here. Not please come back, or ignoring us as we walked around for a few minutes. Well, we had PAID to stay at the hotel and the chapel was supposed to be open to the hotel guests.

I've stayed at true 5-star+ properties - the Four Seasons, Fairmonts, Tajs, Oberois and Ritz-Carltons of the world - and one of the things that make these hotels truly stand out is the refinement of their offerings and training of their staff. All staff are friendly. No services are pushed on you. All rooms are in good shape. Little things are taken care of seamlessly. You feel coddled.

The folks at The Mission Inn try really hard, which is why I think it's a deserving hotel, but it's really a 3.5 to 4 star property and experience.

    Owner Response
    Dear Neha P,

Before anything, I'd like to thank you for your well thought out and thorough review. We always welcome fair, constructive criticism, and we appreciate you taking the time to provide us with just that. I will be sending this review to our management team to ensure they see your feedback regarding the rooms, the service and the food.

As far as the docent in the chapel goes, I apologize on his behalf for his rude response. Unfortunately, docents are employed by the Mission Inn Museum, a completely separate entity from the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, but we will do our best to communicate that docents should always deliver top-notch service (for future reference, the chapel is only accessible via tour through the Mission Inn Museum).

Again, I profusely apologize for the lackluster experience you had. I am sure management will utilize your review to the best of their abilities to improve, grow and hopefully once again reach the expectations of great guests like you.

  • Right Hotel - Wrong Rooms = Disappointment

    by LoriU858 on 2018-04-15 06:15 pm

This property is lovely in just about every way. I know because I came for a first time to stay with family a year ago. I've spent the year since telling everyone I know to consider a stay-cation (we live in San Diego) at the Mission Inn. In Riverside? YES! Riverside!

I have a group of long-time girlfriends looking for a little getaway, so right away I offered to plan it for us (this weekend) at the Mission Inn. Upon arrival, everyone we met (beginning with the person at the front desk) was quick to let us know the hotel was fully booked and quite busy. Got it!

However, nothing could have prepared us for our check-in to Rooms 316 and 317. There was a over-sized tray of half-eaten food/drinks sitting outside and between our 2 rooms upon arrival at 4 pm. Gross. Nothing that a couple of phone calls to the in-room dining services didn't take care of...

Enter our rooms to find we didn't get the 2 double beds in each room that I feel certain I had reserved. I immediately (and politely) called down to the front desk and was again reminded the hotel was full and thus we couldn't have the rooms we had requested. Instead they comp'd a couple of roll-away beds that we had to ask at least 6x to have delivered. I can tell you this is not half the room we stayed in last year for the same price which then included sitting areas and overlooked the beautiful courtyard. I was apologizing to my guests from the get-go.

Next up. I'm getting complaints about the cost of the wi-fi ($9.95/day). I think if the rooms had been right I would've thrown my hands up and told me guests to just deal with it...but as they kept saying to me - "It's not exactly like these rooms were cheap" @ $300/room. Truth be told, I'd have preferred the room be $310 and include wi-fi, it's too nice a location to start nickel and diming the guests.

I convinced everyone our stay would get better with a walk about the property and brunch Sunday morning. Turns out you can't view the Buddha or the Chapel without a key or tour which we didn't have time for...and as we headed to brunch (without a reservation, I blame me!) at 9:30 am (when they open) we learned we needed to head over to Las Campanas - which as it turns out, no one employed at the Mission Inn really understood. So after stopping by the closed Presidents Lounge, trudging around the perimeter of the hotel, inquiring at the front desk, and heading back to the host stand we were finally re-directed to an unmanned host stand outside the Presidents Lounge where after about 10 minutes of wondering if we were standing in the right place we were finally seated in the patio area.

The brunch was lovely. And the grounds gorgeous. But I can honestly say I spent way too much time apologizing to my invited guests for what should've been a 4-star experience from a 4-star hotel which seemed to be under-staffed and overwhelmed by a full house.

I don't think we left with any raving fans of the property which is unfortunate because a) I know how lovely the Mission Inn can be based on my stay a year ago and b) the friends I brought just happen to be centers of influence for well-known organizations who plan national events. So frustrating...

  • Exception customer service at Las Campanas

    by Robert V on 2018-04-09 01:15 pm

This was my first time at the restaurant since I moved to Riverside just about two years ago. Las Campanas has wonderful and tasty Mexican cuisine. The staff and service was quick, friendly and very courteous. I ordered the fish tacos, which came with beans and rice. The taste was savory and left my mouth wanting more. It was just absolutely delicious. I then washed it down with a tasty Mojito and again, they hit the mark again with the tasty Mojito. I definitely recommend this to a group of friends get together, family. It is both casual, casual nice, because it is located outdoors in an open air environment. Just so delicately cute!
