The Montvale Hotel
Experience the warmth and charm of the Montvale Hotel, Spokane’s oldest and only true historic hotel. Established on bustling West First Avenue, the Montvale is surrounded by Spokane’s finest restaurants, bars, theaters, and musical venues. Conveniently nestled in the vibrant downtown arts and entertainment district, this boutique hotel is steps from the city’s most popular attractions and destinations: Riverfront Park, Spokane Falls, the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, and the Bing Crosby Theater, among others.
Built in 1899 as the Montvale Block, it was one of Spokane’s first Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels, providing temporary affordable housing for the swelling influx of miners and laborers to the area at the turn of the century. The three-story red brick building housed commercial business on the first floor, with 30 residential rooms on each the second and third floor. Until 1980, the Montvale Block served as an SRO for more than 80 years and held the unique distinction as Spokane’s oldest, best-preserved, and longest functioning SRO.
Fashioning Early Commercial architecture with an Art Deco steel canopy designed by local Spokane artist Hazen Audel, today’s Montvale Hotel features a large fireplace, cozy furniture, and a magnificent glass atrium. The balance and unique combination of the contemporary and historic furnishings in a classic setting can be seen throughout the property, its 36 spacious guestrooms and suites, and event facilities. A visit to Spokane wouldn’t be complete without staying at the historic Montvale Hotel.
Kilmer and Sons Hardware, the Montvale’s longest-standing commercial tenant and owner from 1936 to 1966, once employed Henry J. Kaiser.
