Overview

When The Raphael Hotel opened in the heart of Kansas City, it was at the forefront of the "boutique hotel" trend - offering individualistic accommodations with European charm, character, and intimacy. Along with personalized service, it was undoubtedly an exceptional value.

The Italian Renaissance Revival-style structure was built in 1928, serving as a nine-story apartment building adjacent to the historic Country Club Plaza. After undergoing extensive renovation and re-purposed into a hotel, it reopened in 1975 as The Raphael Hotel. The building’s original brick exterior was preserved, while conveniences were added for the contemporary traveler.

In 2010, The Raphael concluded a multi-year total renovation. The interior of the hotel was gutted, and the plumbing, heating and electrical systems were replaced. The guestrooms received new baths, fixtures, furniture, and décor. Two meeting rooms and a fitness center were added, and the restaurant and lounge were remodeled and opened under a new name, Chaz on the Plaza. Historical aspects, including the lobby's original marble floor, wood ceiling, and millwork, were retained.

With its convenient location, The Raphael offers easy access to a variety of downtown shops and heritage attractions, as well as Kansas City’s Convention Center, Sprint Center, Crown Center, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Overland Park, Truman Sports Complex, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

The Raphael received the distinguished AAA Four Diamond Award and the noted Forbes Travel Guide Four Star rating. It was voted to the prestigious 2015 T+L 500 World’s Best Hotels by Travel + Leisure magazine readers, and awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame Award for constantly achieving outstanding traveler reviews for five consecutive years. The Raphael Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
