  • Anniversary Celebration in style.

by Ourhouse on 2017-10-13 04:07 am

The Raphael is a unique luxury, boutique hotel with European style and charm. Refined rooms and suites come with high-thread-count sheets, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs and minifridges, as well as free WiFi and 24-hour room service. It is located in the Plaza area of Kansas City.

I planned a 35th Anniversary celebration. To thank my wife for putting up with me. LOL! Unbeknownst to her, I choose what is one of the finest hotels in Kansas City. I read reviews of many of the finer hotels in town and decided on the more "boutique" of a well known hotel chain. Marriott has acquired unique hotels and made them their "Autograph" chain. I wanted the best available and chose their Presidential Suite.

Immediately upon arrival we were created in a manner that reflected the class of the hotel. The Valet immediately opened doors and greeted us with a smile. The front staff was friendly and professional.
I had booked online but had called to ask for anything special they could do to surprise my wife for our celebration. No expense was to be spared. Upon arrival to our room we were greeted by complimentary champaign and assortment of strawberries and fine chocolate. A nice touch.

The room was a sort of 4 room suite furnished with modern crafted, turn of the century styled furnishings. The bedroom featured a king size bed. The bed was soft and comfy. Down pillows and a multi layered duvet' added to its comfort. The sitting area was a unique layout with many furnishings well layed out in a somewhat small but functional room. A separate room off the sitting area featured a large, 2 person sized jetted tub. Another room contained the toilet and tub/shower. Between the 2 bathing areas was a vanity/sink area well appointed with bathing amenities. The towels were full and soft. 2 comfy, fluffy bath robes complete with the Raphael logo hung for our use (and purchase, if desired).
The room had a basket fulloffor purchasefine snacks and chocolates as well as the standard hotel, for purchase, bar refrigerator. A large variety of upscale liquors, juices and sodas was within.
Although the suite was smaller than expected, it was still comfortable and well appointed.

I had also arranged for an Anniversary meal at the on property restaurant, "Chas on the Plaza".
Upon arrival I was surprised at the small size and layout of the dining area.
The main dining area features several smaller, intimate dining areas. A mix of table/chairs, booths and private booths sprinkled within the dining areas. The lounge/bar area was immediately to the right upon entrance. It features high top and regular height tables as well as the bar stool area. In the front street corner was an area for the musician.
I had requested the "best" table and service available. Our arrival was before dining hours so we took a seat at a table just in front of where the nights musician was setting up. We struck up a conversation with the musician while the tentative bartender recommended and served us our drinks. Fantastic was all we could say and think. And.........that was just the beginning.

At dining hour start we were escorted to our table by the ma?tre d'. He led us to a private booth that overlooks the Kansas City area know as the Plaza. The best table in the restaurant. I had to stop him and apologize to him, you see I should have told them prior that due to a back injury, I can only sit in chairs not booths. AARGH! We asked for and chose another table we thought was better for us and were gladly seated there. He was a little confused and apologized at our decline of the "best" and larger table but accommodated us just the same. From there it only got better. The food and service was above and beyond. A review of the Chaz would be needed but survice to say, it added to our overall stay tremendously.

Now back to the hotel review. The size of the hitel is small but that is its feature. Small, personal service. Unique features and furnishings make up for any short comings offered by larger, cookie cutter, resorts and hotels.
I highly recommend the Raphael. Its uniquness is its biggest asset and our reason for choosing it. We were not disappointed.

  • Location, location, location

    by Karla B on 2017-09-23 12:41 am

My daughter and I stayed at the Raphael Hotel for the convenience of walking to the Plaza shops and restaurants. (Off the street parking is included in the room fee.) We had a mini suite consisting of bedroom, LARGE bath, and sitting room. The room was nicely appointed, but not over the top. Staff was pleasant. Even though the hotel is situated on a busy downtown street the room was extremely quiet.

  • Great location - small rooms

by fromRoseville on 2017-09-21 02:27 pm

This is a very elegant hotel. The feel of it is very "european" with dark wood in the lobby, and lots of staff opening doors for you, and so on.

It is quite near the large shopping area - the Country Club Plaza. Shopping there is fine, but there is little out of the ordinary.

The rooms also had very nice beds and furniture, nice towels, high quality toiletries and the like. However, the rooms are small. The area around the bed was small, the bathroom was very small, the sink area was small. The closet was small. Everything was nice, but we felt very cramped. For the price, I guess I would prefer more space.

We did purchase the breakfast. The servings were ample, and the choices quite extensive. One morning we had great service. The next the service was awful. We finally had to get up and try to get our own coffee before someone noticed and ran over. Still, they never came around asking for refills - we had to ask for everything. So - great breakfast - hit or miss service.

I would also add that you had to valet park your car, jacking up the price as a result.

To sum: I would never stay there again.

    Roseville,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your recent stay with us. While we obviously appreciate your many kind comments, we certainly were disappointed that you were not pleased with the size and arrangement of your guestroom. In addition, please know that valet parking is provided with no additional charges involved. We apologize for any confusion that may have been caused in regards to our complimentary parking.

Thank you again for your valued input as well as your patience and your patronage.

  • Great antique hotel

    by Nick B on 2017-09-17 08:45 am

Made a last-second trip down to Kansas City. Fortunately, they had one room left, and they had a Tesla charger for my car. Perfect.

Check in was smooth, and parking is free! That's right, free parking at the plaza. Plugged in our car, and headed into the room.

The room was roomie overall, with a comfortable bed. Vanity in the bathroom is a little small, only room for one person to get ready in the morning.

Overall, great experience for what is obviously an old facility. They have done a good job of keeping it up, and we really enjoyed our stay.

Highly recommend to other Tesla owners, because destination charging is great.

  • Old world hotel and service right in the heart of Country Club Plaza. What is not to like?

by DogenJoe on 2017-09-10 05:49 pm

This is a romantic 5-star hotel located right across from Country Club Plaza. The rooms are quiet, the service is exemplary, the accommodations are comfortable, and the valet parking is free. It is also reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
