  • Room 217 was INCREDIBLE

    by y0kangel on 2018-06-18 07:21 am

My hubs booked room 217 for our 5th anniversary. We stayed on June 15 and left on the 16th. We drove up from Colorado Springs where we are currently stationed and it was about a 2.5 hour drive with summer tourist traffic, but we expected this and it was fine. The drive out was gorgeous. The hotel had been very communicative through email about our upcoming stay and informed us of a possible detour due to construction which was much appreciated since cell service is spotty in the affected area. Check in was a breeze and we were able to make a reservation for breakfast the following morning at the Cascades restaurant right after check in. The room itself was spectacular. I am a huge history buff, as well as a Stephen King fan and a paranormal enthusiast so I can't think of a more perfect room to stay in at The Stanley. The hotel grounds are absolutely gorgeous and immaculately maintained. Every area of the hotel that we saw was clean which is hugely appreciated. The day we stayed was warm but it was not hot in the hotel considering that there is no air conditioning which was great. Every employee we encountered was friendly and helpful but two employees in particular stood out. Ian, the bartender at the Cascade's Whiskey Bar was hands down the most incredible bartender I have ever met and considering that I was a bartender myself for a decade, I have met a LOT of them. He made us feel so welcome and at ease within seconds of bellying up to the bar. He was knowledgeable, interactive, efficient in a small space and was able to make several extremely accurate recommendations for me based on my personal preferences of whiskey. He introduced me to a new personal favorite and absolutely NAILED the whole experience. He helped facilitate a memory we will never forget. The other individual who stood out to us was Sofia at the front desk. We saw her at check in and again the following day at check out. She was friendly, inviting and extremely helpful. As an avid traveler, I have encountered the full spectrum of front desk staff personalities and she was one of my all time favorites.
We didn't have any paranormal experiences during our stay which is perfectly ok. I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have an encounter. Just getting to stay in such a historic and beautiful room was plenty. One of my personal favorite features of the room was the claw foot tub. That thing was fabulous.
One thing I was very apprehensive about with staying in such a notorious room was that we would have all manner of individuals showing up at our door to try and see inside but we did not have one single interruption. Even the tours stayed at the hall intersection a very respectful distance from our door. I was very appreciative of that and of getting to enjoy the privacy of the experience.
Yes the cost of staying in Room 217 or the other 'spirited' rooms on the 4th floor can be prohibitive but in my opinion, for the experience and considering the occasion, I had zero problem with the financial aspect. It was an experience I will never forget and I am extremely grateful to the entire Stanley staff for executing it so flawlessly. I have worked in hospitality before and I KNOW that it does not happen by magic, a ton of work goes on behind the scenes as well as in the public view to make it all come together and they did it beautifully. I would return any day and would absolutely recommend it to anyone.

  • One bedroom condo

    by shan703 on 2018-06-18 04:32 am

We stayed in a one bedroom condo on the hotel property, which was plenty of room for our family of 4. There was a king sized bed in the bedroom and a pullout couch in the living room for the kids. There was a large bathroom, full kitchen, laundry, and an outdoor jacuzzi tub. We you looked out the front door you got a great view of the historic hotel against the mountains. The inside of the hotel itself was beautiful!

  • 2 bedroom Condo at the residences

    by sharonr462018 on 2018-06-17 10:10 am

We didn't stay at the hotel itself, but at one of the 2 bedroom condos directly behind the hotel. I wish I could give it more stars because aside from some improvements needed to feel like it was 'upscale' given the rate we paid to stay for 2 nights, we enjoyed the time we spent up there with family. First off, the condo wasn't available by the 4 pm check in time. They said they would call when it was ready, so we hung out on the grounds where there was a BBQ festival happening, so at least we had something to do while we waited. After waiting nearly an hour with no callback, my husband went up to check again and lo and behold it was ready. Upon entry, I immediately noticed the fireplace vent was exposed and ran over to shut it just as my 15 month old was about to stick his hands inside. We requested a crib and I guess I was expecting an actual crib, but it turned out to be a dirty pack & play. Glad I brought my own sheet because the bottom was soiled and it looked like it was drug out of an attic. It sufficed for 2 nights. All the window sills and the blinds need a serious dusting & there was a bulb out in the bathroom. We tried to make ice in the refrigerator/freezer, but after a short time, we opened the fridge to see a puddle of water on the shelf and no ice. Needs repair/replacement. Nearly all the non stick cookware is scratched, so those should be replaced and consider providing only plastic spatulas, etc. The coffee mugs are ENORMOUS, yet, the super old crusty coffee maker only makes 4 cups. (We had 4 adults, (2 bedrooms?) so we had to brew coffee twice. Could't tell if the coffee provided was expired or not -- it wasn't good. The dishwasher pulls out from under the counter and isn't secured. We made sure to book a condo with a hot tub which we made use of but at the same time were a little grossed out to be in it. The water foamed up a lot, smelled funny and just felt like it wasn't as clean as it probably should be. As for food, service in the lounge was extremely slow despite not being busy. Aside from these mentions, overall, the condo was comfortable and warmly decorated in mountain themes. Despite the TLC this place needs, we lucked out on the first evening as several of the 'resident' elk made an appearance as they casually strolled by the front door of our condo. Score! Visit complete.

  • Nice old hotel

    by hhjones2018 on 2018-06-17 06:56 am

We knew there was no air conditioning but perhaps the hotel might think of doing something about that, not window units, but units that hang up high in the room.

A chair would have been nice in the room, no place to even put on shoes, just perch on the bed.

No continental breakfast as mentioned in the written handout, we looked for it. Not in the Lodge or the main hotel.

The Broadmoor is a beautiful room and about $100.00 less.

  • Stay-cation trip and the Bacon Brothers concert

    by on 2018-06-16 01:46 pm

I was told by a staff member over the phone when I made reservations that my dog would be allowed, but was told the day of the reservation that I could not have a dog. I had to find and pay for a dog sitter which took time away from our vacation in Estes Park. I had trouble finding the room because the room number was written in pen on the door. The sink would not drain and the toilet did not always flush. There was a cheap, ineffective fan placed on the desk that did not provide enough air movement and sleep was very uncomfortable because of the heat. We could not find the ice bucket and after searching it was on top of the dresser which was incredibly dusty. We went to the restaurant before the show and received poor service- a waiter took a drink away before finishing it and then gave back half of that the original order was. We asked several wait staff for a condiment and none brought it or even mentioned whether or not it was available in the restaurant. We were very excited for our mini vacation to Estes and to stay at the Stanley. For the cost and the reputation of the hotel we were very disappointed. I would be happy to discuss this over the phone to remedy my concerns and assist the hotel in providing better service in the future to others.
