  • Beautiful historic hotel especially during Christmas

    by Grobins1 on 2018-02-10 07:13 am

My family and I have stayed during the Christmas season. The hotel is decorated beautifully and with the beauty of the building it makes for a very nice stay. The staff were great and friendly. The rooms are nice, some are a little small but that's how they were built back in the day. The location cannot be beat, walking distance to lots of shops, restaurants, the river, and the train station. The restaurant and bar are nice, the kitchen can run a little slow so give yourself some extra time to eat. If you are looking for a one of a kind place to stay with some history, not another run of the mill hotel look no further.

This is a historic hotel that is a great place to stay. On the Main Street close to great eats and drinks. Service is good, hotel bar is a classic saloon. Price can be good if you shop. Walk to the Durango an Silverton train. Two brewery's within walking distance.

Thank you for your review! The historic Strater Hotel actually has two bars, The Diamond Belle Saloon and The Office Spiritorium that feature great live music seven nights a week! We hope to see you again soon!

  • Historic Charm in the heart of Durango

    by SARAH F on 2018-01-31 01:18 pm

The Strater Hotel is a really cool period hotel in the center of down town Durango. Walking distance to a myriad of shops, bars, restaurants and the river, the location could hardly be more convenient. We upgraded to the Louis L'Amour room upon arrival, which provided views of main street and a bit more luxurious accomodation. The only reason this hotel doesn't get 5/5 from me is because the classic guest rooms are a little small (although they are still full of charm, and provide an excellent option for a place to hang your hat at the end of a night on the town).

Apart from the friendly staff and nice historic atmosphere, the best things about the hotel are the two charming bars, the Diamond Belle Saloon and The Office Spiritorium. Both of which have a great atmosphere and awesome live music. The staff at both are also great and we spent a particualrly lovely evening by the fire drinking yummy cocktails and listening to some great live music in the Spiritorium one night and on the other night of our stay had an equally fun time clapping, cheering and cheersing long to the live music in the Diamon Belle.

Thank you for your review! It was our honor to host you and we hope you enjoyed your visit to Durango, Colorado. We were thrilled we were able to upgrade you to room 222, the Louis L'Amour Room. Guests that stay in this special room stay
the presence of a legacy. This is the exact room where
Louis L'Amour wrote many of his Sackett series novels,
typing at the very same drop-leaf table that remains in the room to this day. Louis preferred this room because he could hear the Rag Time piano play from the Diamond Belle Saloon below as he wrote! We look forward to hosting you again soon!

  • Historic Retreat

    by Katrina P on 2018-01-27 10:41 am

My room on the 4th floor was quiet, even next to the elevator. Authentic furnishings added to the old-west feel. While I did not have dinner at the Mahogany Grille, the breakfasts were nicely done and filling, best for an early start to my day. After a brief historic tour, I felt the urge to check every part of the bed and furniture for secret hiding places! Live music at the saloon is definitely an attraction, and everyone seems to know one another, so it's a close-knit community in the downtown. Great walking distance to many dining options, safe to walk at night, even in the cold. I would stay there again. Staircase and lobby area are a treat. I felt like I was staying in a museum, before I knew it for a fact. Wonderful stained glass artistry, wall coverings, paneling, displays, luxurious velvet drapery and woodworking adorn this time capsule of the old west.

  • Very Historic!

Very busy due to the saloon downstairs. Update not as fine as the General Palmer, a very good location right in the thick of the main strip. Staff friendly and accommodating . Clean I would recommend this property.
