The Thayer Hotel

Overview
From its perch atop the banks of the Hudson River, The Thayer Hotel offers sweeping views of the Hudson River Valley scenery and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Located on the grounds of the Academy, the hotel offers guests the chance to experience some of the pomp and pageantry of West Point. The Academy ranks as one of the top three tourist destinations in New York State, drawing nearly three million visitors per year. Army football remains a strong tradition, and watching a game at Michie StadiumWest Point has been named one of the greatest experiences in sports. Public tours are available daily from 9:00 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. daily, as is the West Point Museum, the oldest and largest public military collection in the Western Hemisphere. The imposing structure of the hotel, with its crenellated facade and towers, gives the impression of a medieval fortress rising from the hillside. The hotel’s interior carries on the medieval theme, using polished wood, leaded glass and marble and stone ornamentation. The vast lobby includes circular candle chandeliers suspended from the ceiling, flags from many nations on display and a collection of portraits of prominent military leaders. The hotel was acquired by a group of West Point graduates in 1999 and underwent an ambitious $26 million restoration.
The hotel was named for Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, superintendent of the Academy from 1817 to 1833.
