The Thayer Hotel

History

Since 1609 when English explorer Henry Hudson first navigated the river that bears his name, visitors have been drawn by the beauty of this region. In addition to its natural abundance and scenery, it has also always been of significant strategic importance to America. West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the country, beginning with the Revolutionary War. George Washington transferred his headquarters here in 1779 and in 1802, President Thomas Jefferson established the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Academy itself is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and welcomes more than three million visitors each year. The Thayer Hotel, located just inside the gates of the Academy, was built in 1926 and named after Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, Superintendent of the Academy from 1817 until 1833. Originally built to accommodate U.S. Military Academy personnel and their guests, the hotel is the only full-service hotel on the Hudson River between the George Washington Bridge and the state capital in Albany. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Thayer Hotel has hosted a long list of dignitaries and celebrities including General Douglas MacArthur, Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, singer Luciano Pavarotti and actors George C. Scott, Gregory Peck and the cast of the hit television series “ The Sopranos.”
