21 Historic Hotels of America Nominated for the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards

WASHINGTON, DC- April 21, 2015- Historic Hotels of America is pleased to announce that the 2015 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards in the 10Best Historic Hotels category includes 21 nominees that are all members of Historic Hotels of America. Over 260 hotels have been inducted into the prestigious Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. These fascinating places are members based on their noteworthy standards, including quality of accommodations, historic significance, record of preserving authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity. Many have been designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as National Historic Landmarks or are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

“Congratulations to the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Best Historic Hotel award nominees. We are delighted that these historic hotels and resorts are nominees. They celebrate and preserve more than 350 years of history” said Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Director of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. “Previously, many of these nominees have been named recipients of Historic Hotels of America Awards of Excellence since 2012. These legendary historic hotels are wonderful places to discover and experience the great stories from across the United States, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

Now it’s the public’s turn to vote for your favorite hotel. Cast your ballot once per day in this category until voting ends on Monday, May 11 at noon ET. Nominees were chosen by a panel of relevant experts, which included a combination of editors from USA TODAY and 10Best.com along with relevant expert contributors and sources.

Historic Hotels of America recommended to the USA Today10Best Readers’ Choice editors that the 2015 nominees should be selected from notable members of Historic Hotels of America including its Awards of Excellence winners from 2012, 2013, and 2014. The oldest historic hotel in Historic Hotels of America, Hotel El Convento (1651) in San Juan, Puerto Rico and “America’s First Resort,” the Omni Homestead Resort (1766) are both featured on the nominations list. Additionally, two hotels designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as National Historic Landmarks, the St. Louis Union Station - a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (1894), St. Louis, Missouri, and The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa (1876) Riverside, California are included. The final recommendation is known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa (1901), Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.

Nominations for the Historic Hotels of America 2015 Awards of Excellence are open. Submit your nominations by July 31. Winning hotels will be announced October 8, 2015 at West Baden Springs Hotel (1902) at French Lick Resort in West Baden, Indiana.
