St. Simons Island GA (May 5, 2014) Sixteen golfers from the King and Prince Golf Course at the Hampton Club on St. Simons Island walked away with the Oglethorpe Cup on April 4th for the sixth time since 2006. A Ryder Cup Format played between the Sea Island Golf Club, Sea Palms Golf Club and The King and Prince, a total of 48 golfers rotated play at each of the three courses from April 2-4, 2014.
The Oglethorpe Cup was founded in 2006 by John Teramo and Jack Montando of Sea Palms, partnering with Rick Mattox (King and Prince) and Doc Strange to create a friendly camaraderie and competition among the three local courses. Named after the original sponsor, Oglethorpe Bank, the current sponsor is Canopy Asset Management led by Mr. Ty Pipkin. With a 9 year history, the Oglethorpe Cup keeps its original name to continue the legacy.
King and Prince owners Mike Sturdivant, Jr. and Walter Sturdivant attended the 2014 competition to play on the winning team, kicking off the Oglethorpe Cup at a cocktail reception at the St. Simons Island Casino before the opening round. Other years that the team was victorious include: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and, of course, 2014.
