  • Are You Kidding Me!!!

    Where to begin, we arrive at 2:49 and were told our room was not ready which is understandable but one minute later it was available. It was a hot summer day, so we brought our cases of wine up to the room. Unfortunately, it was 84 degrees in the room and all the windows were open and no A/C . Tried to turn on the a/c, it would not work, grabbed a maintenance guy that happened to be on the floor and he fiddled with it and said it takes awhile but unless you are in the room moving around it will turn off because of the motion detector. Finally got the manager she got it going better but came up in thirty minutes later to be sure it was still on so we could eat dinner. it is now 7:00 pm and the room is now 79 degrees. That is after 4 hours of continuable a/c. And from what I understand I will have to jump up every hour or the a/c will turn off. We paid $400 for this room for one night. Unbelievable and this the new wing of the hotel. Oh geez, we just figured out there is a motion detector over the bed so I only have to move my arm every hour. At about midnight the room got down to about 74 degrees and we cannot turn the a/c off. Trying to sleep with the drone of the a/c that sounds pretty much like the engine of a 747. Did not sleep all night. We decided to get up and leave at 6:00 in the morning.

    The bathroom has the strangest shower with no door so the whole bathroom gets wet. The bathroom sink has mold and the sink will not drain because there is no stopper handle and you have to pry the stopper up to drain the sink. The spout part of the faucet is not attached to the sink and flops all over.

    Nice touch of the sherry on the dresser but was spilled and not cleaned up by the maids. They also left the note to the people that were there before on the floor of the bathroom.

    The manager is very good and tried very hard to help us and ended up giving us $100 off our room which I am sure is her limit. But as far as I am concerned they should have never rented us this room.

    Most of the waitstaff is friendly and quite good but the bartender is quite surly.

    We will not be back.

  • Nice dining, but poor customer service and golf experience

    We chose The Benbow Inn above other hotels so that we could combine our love of golf with a visit to the Redwoods.

    Good: we very much enjoyed dining on the terrace both evenings where there was a live band, nice ambiance and delicious food.

    Bad: customer service. With the exception of an excellent Jamaican waitress (I'm sorry, I didn't catch her name), customer service was amongst the poorest we have received anywhere in US for a long time. This was from checking in at reception, where we were given very little information about the hotel and facilities, to housekeeping who left dirty glasses and cups in the room, to the bar/restaurant service for afternoon tea & scones where it took 30 minutes and four separate requests to get (i) tea; (ii) cups to drink the tea out of; (iii) milk for the tea; and (iv) scones.... I gave up on asking for tea spoons, napkins or cake knives/forks to actually eat with.

    Really disappointing: golf, which we had eagerly anticipated after reading the press release on the website about making Benbow Golf Course "the best 9-hole PGA rated course in Northern California". In our experience there is some way to go to achieve this both on and off the course: some holes and greens were in awful condition; the desk had no idea what they were doing; we were left to rummage through a store room to get the hired equipment; and the equipment itself was in a poor state. All in all it was a round of golf that we will remember, but for all the wrong reasons.

  • Great find tasty breakfast

    Really happy with our decision to stay here. The rooms were comfortable with great character. We arrived late so didn't explore much. Breakfast on the patio the next morning was a real treat. The hotel is close to the highway and to nature. A perfect mix. The staff were friendly.

  • Operations Failure on July 4th

    Came in on July 4th to stay for two nights. Upon check in we were told the restaurant is totally reserved and we will not be served. Went into town and every restaurant including Cecil's, was closed. Came back to the hotel. The front desk told us we could eat at the lounge or restaurant on 1st come 1st serve. The front desk also said the menu is the same in both the restaurant and the lounge. Went to the host stand to request a table. Was again told we wouldn't be served. I put my foot down and insisted to be served as I am traveling with children - WTH, you need to tell me when I reserve my room that you're not going to serve me; I would have at least brought my own food. Another family with young children was told they couldn't get take out to take to their room. I finally stalked a group finishing their food, and got a table in the lounge. First, it wasn't cleaned for almost an hour - only after multiple complaints to management did they clean the table for us. Then, we were told that the lounge menu is very limited compared to the restaurant (different answer than front desk). What kind of high-end hotel is this? Nobody knows what's going on. Every employee gives us a different answer. We waited over two hours to be served. By the way, I saw plenty of empty tables the whole time. To the Hotel Management's credit, our meal was finally complimentary, and we were given a reduction in price on our breakfast the next day. However, no reason for such an Operations failure.

  • Great location and outdoors. Our Bathrooms and housekeeping and dining experience lacking.

    We loved the location of the Inn - it was an oasis in the midst of rundown towns (not the towns' fault - they are very sparsely populated). The grounds of this hotel are simply beautiful - quiet, relaxing, surrounded by lush greenery, a slow-moving river, and there is a huge lawn you can relax in.

    Our bathroom (not sure if this is the case with every room) experience was awful. The plumbing in the sink and toilet was awful - slow, clogged (all at check-in - I always check a room's bathroom first, as it is very important to me). The hook behind the bathroom door was missing, so there was no place to hang clothes/robe/towel.
    The shampoo and conditioner were nice, but the bath soaps provided were disc-shaped and super tiny, and did not sud and did not feel like a soap at all.
    The worst aspect of the bathroom were the moldy curtains - come on - for a 4 star property with a doorman, I was hoping for clean shower curtains.
    Housekeeping did not provide additional toilet paper as part of their service.
    The dining room service on the July 4th night was extremely lacking - I understand it is a busy night, but there are other places with a shortage of personnel that handle such situations, I am sure this place could have, too. Service was slow, inconsistent, items were missing, and the food was not very good, anyway.
    The next night, we were fortunate to stumble onto a good local organic Asian fusion place in Garberville.
