  • Modern hotel in historic building

    by Dilip R on 2019-07-02 04:00 pm

The Blackburn Inn is a historic building that has recently been converted into a hotel. The property is a fascinating blend of old (exterior facade, building structure, doors to the rooms, etc) and new (room interiors, hallway glass doors, etc). Our family of 3 recently stayed in a queen suite for 3 nights. The suite had 2 rooms and a very spacious bathroom. However the service was not as great as the property. They ran out of bread/pastries at the breakfast on our first day a good hour before end time, and had no alternative to offer. They try to use some app for the room key, but it is incredibly temperamental and we had to struggle with it constantly and eventually gave up and got keycards - which also kept expiring. The TV one evening was not working properly, and they basically told us there was nothing they could do. One day we returned from our sightseeing early evening to find that our room had only been partially cleaned, and we had to call for housekeeping to come and finish the job. This place would be 5* awesome if they beefed up the service.

Historical usually means old, not so here. The restoration is beautiful, and the modern amenities made our stay one to remember. The staff could not have been more attentive without being intrusive. The grounds were well kept, with huge trees shading the area. The porches has small tables and chairs to enjoy the view. Cocktails in the evening and breakfast could both be enjoyed inside or out.

What s great surprise!! With the history of the property, we were a bit leary. However, the hotel and grounds are absolutely lovely!! Original art, beautiful light fixtures and floors! Customer service to the max! The bistro is open late and everyone enjoyed dining al fresco each evening. Quite a treat for sure. We stayed an extra night because we enjoyed it so much!

  • Overpriced

The Blackburn Inn definitely stands out among other hotels. The environment is beautiful especially in the evening and we loved the live music playing at the bistro. The young staff was very kind and friendly.... However, it still cannot justify the $330/night we paid. Our room was not very cleaned when we arrived and the beds didn't have fitted sheets...The menu at the bistro was lacking, the complimentary breakfast mediocre - the fresh pastry were delicious but please add cappuccino/latte and some American breakfast like omelette and pancakes! Also the first night, we heard music playing until 4:30am (thank God for earplugs lol!). I am glad we visited but I am not sure I'd come back again.

  • Repurposed with Success

The Blackburn Inn was a state mental institution, a medium security prison, and is now a well presented hotel with an entry drive that wows! 47 rooms with several slightly different floor plans done in simple, contemporary decor. Huge ceilings and windows, large bathrooms, comfy beds. Furnishings are comfortable, but not lavish and the room style you choose should depend on how much time you plan on spending in the room...i.e., we chose the Deluxe Queen so we could enjoy a couple of reading chairs instead of being faced with reading in bed or at the writing desk. The spaces were clean, wood floors throughout, neat circular stairway to a pergola with great views of Staunton; the largest bath towels we've seen at a hotel in a long time; friendly employees; pastries, sliced "lunch meat", hard boiled eggs, yogurt for self serve breakfast in a small bistro style setting; pretty views from the small tables and chairs that line the front porch of the building; cocktails were well made and there is also the option for light dinner/lunch; Fitness Center is in another building and suffices. The location is great -- the town is very walkable and only about a five minute walk to "get started". Stay on the 4th floor (if you can walk up that last flight of stairs --elevator stops at the 3rd floor) as it hosts only four rooms and the circular staircase!
