I Don't normally stay at Inns that are historic but this Inn blew me away with its updated look but also jot removing the historical aspect of the place. If you close to this place staying here is a must do in this town!

The overall property is nice and the outdoor space looks really nice (for summer and fall gatherings). The hotel does a nice job of keeping some of the historical aspects of the building and some nice modern amenities to make you comfortable. Staff was friendly, but due to the travel restrictions and low occupancy because of the Coronavirus issues - there were not many people in the building. Once travel becomes a little more normal, I think you would enjoy the location to the downtown (which is walkable from the hotel).

  • Unique and awesome!!

This place is beautifully appointed, and probably the coolest place I've ever stayed. The staff was friendly and helpful. The place used to be a mental facility and it looks like they must have spend millions to restore it without removing the old charm. Check out Crucible Coffee for a fantastic cup.

  • The perfect halfway stop between New Jersey and Asheville NC

by KCfromNorthJersey on 2020-03-17 06:40 pm

Incredible 200-year-old building, historic and majestic. Rooms updated, cozy and impeccably cleaned. Small but well-done bar/restaurant, 10-minute walk to lovely downtown Staunton with more sights, history and restaurants, etc. The people at Blackburn were friendly, helpful, knew the history and happy to share it. The other historic buildings around it are being renovated; we heard from the townspeople that a larger restaurant is in the works. We were looking for something halfway between the NJ-NY area and Asheville NC, and it couldn't have been better.

  • A Former Mental Hospital

by tomforstersmith on 2020-03-17 06:20 pm

The Blackburn Inn is an interesting conversion of a once-abandoned Virginia State Mental Hospital into a large and rambling hotel. It is a bit creepy, with the doors to cells still evident in repurposed guest rooms, and I would say it's definitely not for everybody. But if you enjoy a very different experience and aren't easily creeped out, this one might be just what you're looking for! It's different!
