  • Quiet and romantic

by JJFrueh on 2018-09-20 06:29 am

Negatives: Outdoor pool area currently under construction and private beach is experiencing some red algae. Not close to activities, shopping or bars but shuttle service and bicycles are available. $20/day to park your car as a guest. My husband and I got a complimentary checkout until 1 and was told we could use the pool and stay on property until we needed to leave for our flight. Told we could use the spa room showers to clean up and our room keys would still work to get us in everywhere. Keys do not work!!

Positives: Stunning historic hotel and spotless. Friendly staff and restaurants have good food. Ice cream parlor is adorable with some of the best ice cream I have had. In room mini bar. Beautiful room views from all directions of your room.

  • Worst stay yet!

The family did a long weekend at the Don - we visit at least twice a year. The hotel has definitely lost some of it's specialness since it was taken over by Loews but the family still liked it up until our most recent stay. When we booked our rooms we were not alerted to the fact that the hotel was under construction or that there was red tide. One of the pools and the hot tub were under construction. Since there was red tide the beach was not an option so everyone had to jam into the one open pool - this meant families with children and drunk wedding guests blasting music. We also felt that food and beverage service was incredibly slow - you have 100 people at the pool - add an extra waiter! Just terrible. In addition to the inconvenience of the construction - there was loud tile cutting and drilling even on Saturday morning. I also noticed that we were still charged a resort fee - not at a discounted rate. When I asked for a late check out - 1:30 - I was told I was only allowed up to 1 pm or I had I pay. Like really? I know that the hotel staff must know it is wrong to not alert incoming guests about the construction. They cannot be idiots so to me it felt very manipulative. I felt taken advantage of. Very disappointing all around. I heard there is a new luxury hotel opening on Tampa - I will be going there for my next stay.

We strive to provide a world class guest experience, and are currently working on improving our pool offering. It was not our intention to mislead you, as the remaining pool and indoor spa services are available for all guests to enjoy during their stay. However, with the combination of a shift in tides affecting our beach, the demand at the pool over the busy times has been greater than expected. Our team has increased pool guest services and relocated games and experiences in an effort to ensure each and every guest has a wonderful experience with us.

We very much appreciate your business, and hope we can earn your business back with us. Please let us know if there is a specific time to connect directly and discuss your concerns in detail.

Thanks for your patience and we hope to see you soon. - The Don CeSar Team

  • No more bait and switch!

by homebodyNYC on 2018-09-17 09:57 am

Here's the thing. We've stayed at the Don CeSar many times, often going twice a year. The service has definitely gone downhill since Loews bought it, but it's still a nice destination and a beautiful setting. But here is all I ask: when you call a hotel to make a reservation, and the hotel knows that they are under construction and only one pool is open, JUST LET ME KNOW. I still would have made the reservation, but I wouldn't have felt completely misled when I showed up to find everyone crowded around the one pool. The hot tub was shut and the area with games in the shade was totally gone. There was barely any room in the pool to get in and impossible to get seats. OF COURSE this diminishes your experience, and of course they should tell you at booking and knock $50 off your stay--particularly if you are a repeat customer. This makes me not want to go to the Don anymore, whereas if they had just told me ahead of time I would have been perfectly happy. Do better, Don.

  • Worst dining experience in a while

    by keukalake12 on 2018-09-17 07:20 am

Absolutely the most saddening, disappointing, truly miserable dining experience we've had in a long time. I can understand disgusting service and below average service at McDonald's and we are fine with that but the Don Cesar.....I mean come on. I initially walked to the hostess and stood with a big smile. Stared at me for 30 seconds with no effort to speak. I figured maybe she was handicapped so I used hand gestures to kindly ask for a table for 2. She spoke the same amount of English as my 2 year old and tried to explain to me that it's the weekend so we don't have oysters. I kindly asked for her weekend menu and educated her that oysters were on it. She was rude. And our server was autroshus. She completey messed up our drinks and ignored any of our requests. The oysters at $5 a piece were the size of pennies. The server said "you get what you get, I don't eat them I don't know". This was such a terrible way to start our day at such a supposedly high end resort :(

Thanks for joining us at the Don CeSar, and for your feedback. Our team here takes guest service and overall experience very serious, and we are discouraged to hear of your concerns. However, our team members work hard and are very dedicated, so we hope that you will provide them an opportunity to service you again in the future.

This season we launched an oyster raw bar and have been offering some of the best east and west coast selections of fresh oysters each week. We hope that our servers provide you with an overview of the available options, which do vary in size and flavor depending on the region.

Our team will meet to discuss ways to improve our communication and efforts. We hope you will join us again soon.

  • Might Want to Wait Before You Book

    by 395rhondap on 2018-09-15 12:54 am

The Don CeSar was on our list of places to stay. Admittedly, I love historic hotels and architecture. The Don makes a dramatic first impression. The exterior is quite beautiful. We get quite spoiled living in Florida as there are many beautiful places to stay. Upon entering the hotel we were a bit underwhelmed, however once we got into the interior of the hotel it was quite pretty. The rooms, however need updating and general maintenance. We booked a suite and were shocked by how small it was. We could have gotten beyond that if the room itself wasn't in such poor condition. Upon opening the pull out sofa we discovered it was covered in mold/mildew. The carpet was torn in the room and the chair was filthy. The bathroom towel looked like they belonged in a car wash, not in a luxury hotel. I will say this hotel has a great staff, I called down to the front desk and explained that the room needed upkeep and replacements and they moved us to another room. It was better, but still quite dated. The hotel is also renovating one of its pools. Normally this would not be an issue, however the hotel is experiencing red tide so you cannot go in the ocean. As such the halls smell very fishy and the one existing pool was quite crowded. The red tide is beyond the hotels control however they should notify guests. I kept thinking how unfortunate it would be for someone traveling far away to find they could not utilize the beach nor fit in the one open pool as there are so many people in it. We left the hotel early this morning as there was nothing else for us to do there. I should also mention that the room was not discounted due to renovations or the red tide. We paid over $500.00 for one evening. I'd also like to note that the two beds in the bedroom appear to be full sized. This was not a huge issue for us as I'm short compared to my husband that is tall and my kids worked it out with one on the couch and one in the bed, but if you are a tall family, you might want to consider different accommodations. We left the Don feeling so disappointed. I'm sad that this beauty is experiencing some neglect and sad for the sea animals that are dying as a result of the red tide. My suggestion would be to wait before booking, at least until the pool is renovated. Also of note, if you call the hotel and ask for the status of the beach, they transfer you to a number that doesn't pick up.
